The officials of the Universal Service Provision Fund met with the National Library Management with a view to implementing E-Library project across the country.
Addressing the National Management staff, the USPF Secretary, Mr. Abdullahi Maikano, explained that the e-library project aims at creating a platform for connecting the existing libraries in the country for sharing of information and other resources within and outside the country.
He said the project would provide an avenue for online access to educational materials on a wide range of subjects in order to build an e-society and promote digital lifestyle among the citizenry.
According to Mr. Maikano, National Library of Nigeria being the apex library and intellectual storehouse of the nation is the most suitable organization to collaborate with to carry out the e-library project.
In his response, the Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Habib Jato, said the e-library is a welcome project especially at this time of global communication network.
He said the National Library of Nigeria is currently operating in 27 state branches with rich library resources and adequate manpower.
Mallam Jato however regretted that National Library of Nigeria is currently facing severe financial constraints resulting from poor funding, adding that the paucity of funds grossly hinders the institution from carrying out its mandate and functions to the fullest.
The Director/Chief Executive Officer promised to have a healthy and robust working relationship with the USPF.
PowerPoint presentation showcasing the USPF operation was made by the USPF officials after which there were questions and answers session.
The event was witnessed by all the Directors and Secretary to the Board of National Library of Nigeria.
