The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, announced the decision on Thursday night after the union’s National Executive Council meeting which was held in Abuja. 

In a bid to avert a strike by the labour movement last month, the FG had through the Federal Ministry of Justice secured an order from the National Industrial Court restraining the NLC and the Trade Union Congress from embarking on any strike action over issues bordering on “removal of fuel subsidy, hike in prices of petrol and consequential increase in cost of living,” pending the determination of the suit.

Ambassador Mohammed Dauda, former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has accused his removal from office of being orchestrated by those he refused to release public funds to for personal use. A Rivers State High Court has remanded the Managing Director of Saipem Contracting, Mr. Walter Peviana; and Kelechi Chinakwe in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre over an alleged conspiracy to cheat and with intent to defraud the Rivers State Government of $130m.

The lead counsel to the Rivers State Government, Chief Godwin Obla, SAN, prayed that those absent be tried in absentia since they have been duly served court processes. Malam Muhammed Sani Abdullahi, the commissioner of the Planning and Budget Commission, revealed that the Social Register in Kaduna state has more than two million persons from both urban and rural areas. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), 1.74 million children in Nigeria's North East are underweight. Acute malnutrition analysis among children in six local government areas, including Machina, Yusufari, Nguru, Bade, Bursari, and Geidam, all located on the northern edge of Yobe State, reached a critical level according to the Integrated Food Phase Classification (IPC). In Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, the analysis found that "high levels of acute malnutrition are prevalent in many areas between September and December 2021, with over 60% of areass analysed being in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification IPC AMN Phase 3 (serious) of 4 (Critical)."Through August 2022, it is anticipated that almost 1.74 million children under the age of five will have acute malnutrition.This includes more than a million children who are moderately malnourished and about 614,000 kids who are extremely malnourished. The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has said the 114 per cent increase in the salaries of elected politicians, including the president, vice president, governors, lawmakers as well as judicial and public office holders is still a proposal.

RMAFC chairman, Muhammadu Shehu, represented by a federal commissioner, Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, had presented reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, on Tuesday. Shehu was reported to have urged the 36 states’ Houses of Assembly to hasten efforts on amendment of relevant laws to give room for upward review of remuneration packages for political, judicial and public officers.

RMAFC is saddled with the responsibility of determining the appropriate remuneration for political officeholders including the president, vice president, governors, deputy governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices as mentioned in sections 84 and 124 of the constitution. The proposal, which was developed during ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, needs the approval of 2/3 of states assemblies before it is presented to the President for assent.

Fifty children were feared trapped when a building housing a satellite church of Salvation Ministries collapsed during evening service at Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Council of Delta State. The 10-year-old building was initially designed as a plaza before the church occupied the upper chamber and started to reshape it to suit its purpose. It finally caved in while it was undergoing reconstructions by the new owner, who allegedly bought the building at the rate of N300 million. About 15 women and 20 children have been rescued, but it could not be immediately ascertained whether they were still alive as they were being rolled into ambulances. A woman, who was wailing beyond control at the scene, said her three children were among those trapped in the building.

Gunmen have kidnapped a popular Anambra State-based native doctor, Chinedu Nwangwu, alias Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki, after killing two of his aides in one of his hotels, Triple P Hotel, in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State. A source said that Tiwaraki was regarded to be among the strongest and was the richest witch doctor in Anambra.

The source said that many people were reported to flock to his mansion in Oba for anti-bullet charms and other money rituals. Police spokesperson in the state, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the incident happened around 11pm on Sunday but that he had been released.

Not less than 201 people have been reported killed within five months in 27 attacks in seven local government areas in Plateau State, Daily Trust reports. The killings occurred between January 19 and June 20. The local governments are Riyom, Bokkos, Jos South, Jos East, Barkin Ladi, Bassa and Mangu. The figure is based on data sourced from reported killings in the state, therefore, the casualty figure may be higher.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reports that 3.3 million people are now internally displaced in Nigeria as a result of numerous crises. Finda Koroma, vice president of the ECOWAS Commission, stated at a stakeholder workshop on the "Best practises for stabilisation in West Africa" that the subregion needed to address the challenge of displacement. For instance, the Militant Islamist group has displaced 1.2 million people in Burkina Faso. About 35 ministries, departments, and agencies of the Federal Government failed to appear before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating alleged employment racketeering. The committee, chaired by Yusuf Gagdi, accused the MDAs of lacking respect for constituted authority and ordered them to provide staff members to serve as desk officers. Gagdi had previously urged the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Budget Office, IPPIS, and the FCC to provide desk officers. The four agencies that appeared before the committee were the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the National Teachers Institute, the National Commission for Colleges of Education, and the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria. Gagdi criticized the MDAs for applying for a waiver for recruitment without advertising, claiming such waivers were usually used to perpetrate fraud.

Upon further interrogation by the Police, the suspect identified himself as a 29 year-old Jubrila Mohammed and confessed to being a Boko Haram member from Damboa in Borno State. “The suspect also informed the Police that he and his colleagues, who were later arrested too, intended to attack organisations associated with Atiku Abubakar and some other sensitive locations in Yola. “All four suspects have been handed over to military authorities. We commend the police for the work that they continue to do in this particular investigation. We further ask that other relevant security agencies remain on top of their brief.”

Four miners were killed when a mining pit collapsed on them in Kogo Kadage forest, Bauchi State. The incident occurred while miners were digging lead ore. Ningi LGA Chairman Hon Ibrahim Zubairu confirmed the incident, stating four people were trapped in the pit and three died instantly. Zubairu constituted a committee to check mining activities and requested Burra Divisional Police Officer supervision.

The federal government says 43 percent of Nigerian children between the ages of five and 11 actively participate in economic activities. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Daju Kachollom, said this in Abuja yesterday when she led a road walk to the National Human Rights Commission’s headquarters. She noted that child labour violates children’s rights to education, health, mental and moral growth.

She cited the 2016-2017 MICS Survey stating that 39 percent of children engaged in child labour work in such dangerous industries as artisanal mining, granite quarrying, commercial sexual exploitation, and armed conflict. She said the government was committed to the global fight against child labour.

Bandits have attacked a Niger State community, killing at least 50 people and causing 13 military personnel to be killed and some local vigilantes injured. The bandits were terrorizing Kundu village near Zungeru, Wushishi Local Government Area, and were reportedly settling with cows and domestic animals. Senior military officers also lost their lives to the bandits. The killing of military men occurred on Sunday, with 13 casualties recorded and eight others killed by the bandits. The bandits laid ambushs for the military men, who were on a rescue mission. At least 21 military personnel corpses were deposited at the Zungeru Federal Medical Centre, while injured vigilante members were receiving temporary treatment. The Nigerian Air Force's MI-171 helicopter crashed near Chukuba Village in Niger State, with preliminary investigations underway to determine the probable cause of the crash.

A 6-month-old baby, Chinedu Chukwueke, has reportedly been stolen at his mother’s salon shop in Kure Ultra-Modern Market, Minna, Niger State. The father of the boy, Chikezie Stanley Chuks, broke the sad news on his Facebook page. He wrote, “Good afternoon, pls my baby boy by name Chinedu Chukwueke of 6 months old was taken from my wife’s shop today Sunday 23 July, 2023 at Kure market Minna. Mohammed Zarma, an ex-DEPUTY Comptroller with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has reclaimed his freedom. He was allegedly kidnapped by armed individuals last Friday in Kwara State. Nigerian state governors have formed vigilante squads to combat kidnappings and bandits. The squads, consisting of vigilantes, hunters, and neighborhood watch groups, will complement police and other security forces. The abductions have taken scores of Nigerians, with some states in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Lagos, and others under siege. The abductors are demanding a N100m ransom for the release of the nine victims. The governors are deploying trained personnel to enhance public safety and bolster existing security structures. The formations are being created due to the thin deployment of security forces, particularly in rural areas, and the increasing number of attacks by non-state armed groups.

Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyinga (PAUU) has produced 60 first class graduates in various disciplines. A total of 20,634 graduates and 1,600 from the school of postgraduates studies  were  awarded certificates at a combined convocation of the institution held at the main campus, Ayingba, on Saturday. The vice chancellor of the University, Proffessor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche explained that the institution had not been able to hold the convocation ceremonies since 2015, stressing that the convocation which could have been held in 2020 was cacelled due to the advent of Covid-19 in the country. Proffessor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche , who is the first female vice chancellor of the university, said the citadel of learning graduated a total of 20,634 students from 2014/2015- 2019/2020 academics sessions. According to her, out of 20,634 graduates, a total of 60 made first class, while no fewer than 80 made ordinary pass. She said in adition the University also graduated now fewer for 1600 from the school of Post Graduate Studies with 87 phD degrees, 556 masters degrees, 97 postgraduates diplomas and 138 diploma certificates.

He is seeking to test the authenticity and origin of 12 pages of documents, including two different diplomas, that purport to have been issued by CSU.

The Federal Government has arraigned Oladipupo Adebutu, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, on seven counts related to vote-buying and other electoral offences during the March 18, 2023, governorship poll. Adebutu was arraigned alongside five others before Justice Abiodun Akinyemi of the Ogun State High Court. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges in the criminal case marked AB/10c/2023. The All Progressives Congress had dragged Adebutu before the police, alleging that he induced voters during the poll by allegedly giving out 200,000 vouchers preloaded with N10,000 to prospective voters. The Federal Government filed charges against Adebutu and his PDP allies last year, but their arraignment was stalled as Adebutu was said to have travelled out of the country for medical treatment.

Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, has asked that those accountable for Timothy Adegoke's killing be brought to justice. He made the call while attending a memorial service for a 37-year-old Master of Business Administration student at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Osun state, along with other dignitaries at Eruwa Town Hall in Eruwa. Then, he demanded a thorough inquiry into the murder, emphasising that no one found culpable, regardless of their position, should escape punishment. A seven-man delegation of the Confederation of African Football(CAF), on Tuesday, visited the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium to inspect facilities ahead of the 36th Africa Nations’ Cup, Nigeria is bidding to co-host with its neighbouring Benin Republic in 2027. 

The CAF inspection team was led on a facility tour of the 15,000-capacity stadium by Mrs. Sabina Chikere, the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Sports Commission.

In a bid to achieve Africa’s target of $450 billion income through export, AFEX has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ghana Commodities Exchange (GCX), to boost  cross border commodity trading ecosystem across Nigeria and Ghana.

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is seeking to borrow N2.3tn ($3bn) from Afrexim Bank to support the naira. Afrexim Bank is currently in talks with oil traders to finance loans, as the naira hit an all-time low of 1,000 to the dollar on the black market.

Following the relative peace being achieved in Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni yesterday lifted the 10 years ban on the use of motorcycles in Yobe North and South of the state. Governor Buni lifted the suspension and restored the use of motorcycles in 10 local government areas. The local government areas are Gashua, Jakuso, Machina, Yusufari, Nguru, Karasuwa, Potiskum, Fune, Nangere and Fika. Buni commended the residents for their resilience and patience during the 10 years of suspension of motorcycles in the state, which came into effect at the height of the Boko Haram Insurgency. He said his administration was satisfied with the current security situation in the state, adding that security forces were still flushing out and arresting remnants of Boko Haram members and their collaborators. According to the governor, the lifting of the ban is meant to ease the hardship of citizens, facilitate easy transportation and cost-effective movement as well as enhance farming activities in the state.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has pledged to prosecute individuals who allegedly colluded with the suspended Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Ari, during the 2023 gubernatorial election. Fintiri commended INEC for remaining impartial despite the REC's "irresponsible and unlawful" conduct. He emphasized the need for legal action against those involved to protect the electoral process and democratic culture from abuse. Femi Falana, a rights activist and senior lawyer, has called on authorities to release the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, from custody. Falana argues that Bawa's continued detention violates his rights and constitutional provisions. Bawa was arrested in June after being investigated for alleged breach of the law. Falana argues that the secret service cannot remand a defendant for more than 56 days cumulatively. He also suggests that the federal government should charge the two detained suspects before a competent court if there was evidence of criminal offenses. Falana argues that the detention of Bawa is spent, invalid, and illegal under Section 493 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and Section 35 of the Constitution of Nigeria. He urges the federal government to respect the rights of Bawa and the Director of Public Prosecution in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) was sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Fagbemi, a respected jurist, is expected to initiate reforms to reshape the legal system. The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) Nigeria has launched a probe into a Bell 429 helicopter crash that occurred at Bauchi Airport. The helicopter, owned and operated by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), crashed Wednesday night with its six occupants severely injured. The aircraft was involved in a controlled safe landing at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi, and none of the occupants sustained any injury. The Ministry of Aviation has said the planned concession of four most profitable airports in Nigeria to private investors will still happen before the end of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in May 2023. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has sought to deepen bilateral relations with British Government, particularly, in the area of security, agriculture and infrastructural development. SGF made the disclosure when he received in audience the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, when the later paid him a courtesy visit in his office. Having congratulated the British High Commissioner to Nigeria on his new posting, he called on the British Government to assist the Federal Government to curb Boko Haram insurgency, banditry and farmers-herders clashes as they did during Nigeria’s civil war.

The Akwa Ibom State government has started the ejection of illegal miners from their places of operation to protect the environment.

The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Chief Uno Etim Uno, revealed that the government ejected a Chinese mining company, Ruitai Mining Company from its operation base in Esuk Ikim Akeme community, Ibeno Local Government Area, where it was illegally mining titanium ore. 

Speaking on Tuesday in Uyo, Uno stated that he, alongside the Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security, Brig. Gen. Koko Essien (rtd), on an inspection of Ruitai Mining facility discovered that it was involved in illegal mining.

He explained that the product, black clay-like minerals, was discovered in sack bags of 50kg. However, the Managing Director and Director of the company, Zeng Zhonghuan and Huang Ying, were absent at the site, while the available staff members could not provide any information or documents on their right to operate in the area. 

 He explained that upon the discovery, the government invited the police and army to take over the site pending when the company was cleared to operate, adding that Ruitai was given until Friday this week to present documents qualifying them to mine the mineral.

He stated that further enquiry revealed that the company was an exploration company, whose Board of Directors comprised only Chinese persons, therefore, not eligible to acquire the small-scale mining license as they claimed.

The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health has raised the alarm over the prevalence of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) in 11 councils of the state, with four council areas being endemic to Onchocerciasis (River Blindness), soil-transmitted Helminthiasisis (intestinal worms), Schistosomiasis or snail fever with water snail as vector, and Lymphatic Filariasis or elephantiasis. The most affected council areas are Ibeno, Ibiono Ibom and Ika. Uwa urged partnership with the media, private sector, and entrepreneurs to help the vulnerable.

The death of Professor Alex Gboyega, a retired professor of political science at the University of Ibadan, is the latest in a series of deaths of prominent Nigerians that have overshadowed the month of January 2022. Gboyega emerged from the former University of Ife scholar-practitioner framework of engagement, which demanded that there must be serious attention given to recruitment in a way that adds to the functionality of the institute of administration as a complement of the practice of public administration in the public service. His specialization straddled local governance, public administration and indigenous political institutions, telling a coherent and significant story about his research portfolio. The challenge of deploying the federal framework as the most formidable structure within which Nigeria could achieve national integration and development is highlighted by Alex Gboyega's 1981 essay and 2003 inaugural lecture. Contrary to the 1976 local government reform enshrined in the 1979 Constitution, the present state of the local governments and local governance is dismal due to the absence of local governance and its distinctive elements.

Former Nigerian Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, has filed a motion to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC)'s powers to prosecute him for alleged $6 billion in contract fraud. The EFCC alleged that Agunloye illegally awarded a contract for the construction of a 3,960 MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station without any budgetary provision, approval, or cash backing. Agunloye was also alleged to have corruptly received a kickback of N3.6 million from the company he awarded the contract to. The defendant, who also served as a Minister of State for Defence, pleaded not guilty to the seven-count charge against him. At the resumed proceedings, the 76-year-old defendant queried the EFCC's powers to try him over the alleged offenses, arguing that the agency was bereft of both the investigative and prosecutorial powers under Sections 6, 7, and 46 of the EFCC Act, 2004 to initiate the case against him.

The Transparency Group in the House of Representatives is investigating allegations that $25,000 was given to members to sign up for a vote of confidence on Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Former chairman Abdulmumin Jibrin accused lawmakers of collecting the sum to sign a register in the Speaker's Asokoro residence. The group is trying to establish facts around the issue of members signing to pass a vote of confidence on the Speaker. Chika described the collation of signatures as a "crime" against Nigerians who voted in members of the National Assembly. He called for President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure full investigations into the allegations of budget padding made against the four principal officers. Chika is keen on the Speaker stepping aside, despite his statement that budget padding is not a crime.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has summoned a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples' party of Nigeria (PPN) in Zamfara State, Adamu Bashir and two others to take their plea on an alleged N299.86 millon fraud charge. The other firm, OBD Petroleum Limited; and its managing director Umeanor Obinna Micheal.Justice Abimbola Awog boro issued the bench warrant on wedneday, sequel to an applicatin by a senior counsel in the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). Mrs Kehinde Bode-Ayeni. Bode -Ayeni alleged that the Defendants had failed to show up for their arraignment filed against them. Justice Awogboro granted the application and adjourned till March 3, for defendants' arraignment. According to the amended charge marked FHC/L/281c/2016, the defendants on about October 2014, obtained loans of N160million and N139.8mllion in two tranches from a bank by false pretence and with intent to defraud. The defendants allegedly pretended that money woulld be used to supply 2.2million litres of AGO to Lastal Energy, Limited.  

The Association of Alternative Power Suppliers of Nigeria has expressed the readiness to develop mini grids to augment electricity generation and supply in the country. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission recently unveiled the Draft Mini-Grid Regulation 2016, saying mini grids could be used as a bridge technology to accelerate electrification activities. NERC said the mini-grid regulation was specifically designed to accelerate electrification in areas without any existing distribution grid and areas with an existing but poorly electrified or non-functional distribution grid, especially but not limited to rural areas. The President, AAPSN and Managing Director, AOS Orwell, Mr. Femi Omotayo, said members of the association would provide alternative power mainly through embedded generation projects to fill the supply gap in the power sector. According to Abiola-Odunowo, the association’s plan is to find 10 companies in each local government that can generate one megawatt to start with. He said the mini-grid regulation would afford alternative power producers the opportunity to go to the consumers directly.

Forer for Transportation in Rivers State, Tolafari Georgmer Commission e, has debunked claims that former state governor Rotimi Amaechi abandoned the state's aircraft in Germany, saying the aircraft was never abandoned but put up for sales to generate revenue for critical infrastructural projects. George accused the Rivers State government of falsely accusing him of wanting to steal the Legacy aircraft, and questioned why they are still using the same foreign registration seven years after taking possession. He described the issue as "purely political and vindictive".

The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs will, tomorrow, meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geof­frey Onyeama, over claims that some states were omitted from the ambassadorial list sent to the chamber for approval by President Mu­hammadu Buhari. Two members of the committee, Enyinnaya Abaribe and Sonni Ogbuoji, who confirmed that the minister would appear before the lawmakers, could not, however, establish whether Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir Lawal, would also be at the meeting. Onyeama and Lawal were also expected to explain to the lawmakers the perceived irregularities in the list of nominees, including the alleged selection of some junior officers in foreign service for ambassadorial appoint­ments instead of their superiors. However, the two public servants did not meet with the committee as scheduled before the National Assembly went on the short recess. Dariye had, while making his submissions, observed that the ambassadorial list was full of omissions and irregularities and should be corrected before the Senate could consider it for approval. He alleged that, in his state, Plateau, those nominated by the president who were not qualified as senior career officers in the foreign service from the state were left out, while their junior counterparts were picked. The prayer was adopted, leading to the invitation of the minister and the SGF.

Former governor of Rivers State and a minister-designate, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, visited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Gnaduje, in Abuja. Wike, leader of the G-5 Governors, who worked against the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 election, has repeatedly denied plotting to join the ruling party. The PDP chieftain who is believed to have worked for the success of President Bola Tinubu during the presidential election in Rivers State, was received by Ganduje at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Details of the visit were sketchy but a post by the ruling party on X (formerly known as Twitter), indicates that the former governor’s visit to the APC national chairman was to congratulate him on his election to the position. Daily Trust reports that shortly before the senate confirmed him as a minister, Wike told BBC Pidgin why he had been hobnobbing with APC chieftains. The former governor, who had earlier used the illustration of malaria and cancer to dismiss speculations that he was on the way to the ruling party, gave clarification. Earlier when asked if he was thinking of dumping the PDP in the heat of the face-off with Atiku, Wike had said, “I get malaria, na cancer I dey find?”  However, defending his recent moves, including making it to Tinubu’s cabinet, the former governor said while someone can die of Malaria, a person with cancer can get healed if he has the opportunity of meeting a better doctor.

Amnesty International and some activists have challenged the Lagos State government to disclose the identities of the 103 #ENDSARS victims billed for mass burial. Daily Trust, on Monday, reported that in a letter dated July 19 by the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency titled: Letter of No Objection – Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 ENDSARS victims, the state government engaged the service of a private firm, Messrs Tos Funeral Ltd, at the cost of N61,285,000 to bury 103 victims of the protest. 

“Following review of your request and based on the information provided therein, the agency has “No Objection” to the award of contract to MESSRS TOS FUNERALS LIMITED at a total cost of N61,285,000 (Sixty-one million, two hundred and eighty-five thousand Naira only) for the mass burial for the 103, the year 2020 Endsars victims,” noted the Director- General of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency, Mr Onafowote Idowu in the letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health.

Responding to the leaked document, the Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, said the Nigerian authorities must urgently halt the plans to carry out a secret mass burial of the victims. It demanded a thorough and independent investigation into the killings and ensure that those suspected to be responsible were brought to justice in fair trials.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has warned the newly-elected chairmen of the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 additional Local Council Development Areas in the state against short-changing their people. Amosun gave this warning during the swearing-in ceremony for them at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta. The new chairmen, all of the ruling All Progressives Congress, were declared winners of the 57 chairmanship seats by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission in the last Saturday’s council elections in the state. Amosun urged them to see their new status as a “call to service” and urged them to be “transparent, accountable and not short-change the people” lest they would be called to give account of their stewardship to President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of probity. The governor said the position they occupied should be for the growth and development of the people, not for settling political scores.

Tobi Amusan, the world women's 100m hurdles champion and record holder, is missing from Team Nigeria's list of 26 athletes for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The list includes 11 male and 15 female athletes, with Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro, Sade Olatoye, and Chioma Onyekwere among the prominent females. The list also includes national champion Usheoritshe Itshekiri, Favour Ashe, Seye Ogunlewe, Alaba Akintola, Fakorede Adekalu, and Anunagba Karlington. Amusan's participation at the championship has been uncertain due to her provisional suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit for missing three drug tests this season. The Athletics Integrity Unit has stated that there will be a hearing on her case before the World Championships, but nothing has been heard about the proceedings. Amusan made history at the championships last year, racing to a new world record time of 12.12secs in the semi-finals and 12.06secs in the final to clinch the gold medal.

Capital Oil Chairman Ifeanyi Ubah has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of a fraudulent primary in the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State. Ubah alleged that the primary was a sham and that the party had the right to trample on its constitution and the Electoral Act. He stated that the list of delegates used for the election was different from the list given to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Ubah, a loyal member of the PDP, described the Anambra governorship primary as a "show of shame" with obvious irregularities. He accused the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and some party committee members of robbing the people of their dream for a potential governor.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out one of nine counts of $1.6bn crude oil fraud against businessman Jide Omokore and five others. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba struck out the eighth count after hearing an application by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who alleged she was indicted without an opportunity to defend herself. The six defendants include Omokore, his companies Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited and Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Limited. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had preferred nine counts of criminal diversion of about $1.6bn, alleged to be part of proceeds of sales of petroleum products belonging to the Federal Government. Alison-Madueke, currently in the UK, was not listed among the existing six defendants in the case to defend the charge.

Stakeholders in the ongoing fight against corruption have tasked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other realted Offences commision (ICPC), and other relevant agencies on the compelling need to enhance their scope of disseminating information on gains recorded. The charge was given yesterday by the MacArthur foundation, United Nations office on Drug and crime (UNODO) as well as Transparency International (TI) at an event organised by the center for media and accountability (CMPA).

A Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Babafemi Badejo, has said though former President Muhammadu Buhari failed woefully in the fight against corruption, his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be worse. Badejo stated this while delivering the first inaugural lecture of Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, titled: “Interests.”

He submitted that Tinubu, judging from his actions in the last one month, would do by far than Buhari in other areas, but not in the fight against corruption. “It is my own view that former President Muhammadu Buhari failed woefully on the issue of anti-corruption. He did start by wanting to implement the UN anti-corruption’s strategy and went further to appoint a committee and that committee did nothing till today.”

The law against open gracing signed by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State has begun to yield results, some stakeholders have said. Although cattle were seeing gracing openly in some obscure locations across the State, the incidence of clashes between farmers and herders that used to characterise their relationship had become less. Community leaders, a farmer and a fulani praised the State government for putting the anti-open gracing law in place, saying that since it was signed into law, there had been no conflict between herders and farmers and it would be difficult to obey the law prohibiting open gracing because ranching is very expensive and impracticable considering the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Nigeria's official exchange rate is experiencing a significant divergence from parallel market rates, reaching N100/$1. This is the widest gap since the currency's unification, driven by an insatiable demand for the US dollar that surpasses the available supply. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) initially hinted at allowing free trade until the currency reached a market-relevant level, but concerns have arisen that the high demand for foreign exchange might lead to further depreciation of the local currency. Factors contributing to this predicament include a significant influx of foreign currency from non-oil sources into the black market, exacerbated by the dollar shortage issue. Nigeria's failure to meet the OPEC quota plays a vital role in determining the value of the Naira, as oil remains a major contributor to foreign currency earnings. The country's crude oil production has fallen short of OPEC's target of 1.74 million barrels per day, and the principle of willing buyer-seller foreign exchange trading could have negative short-term effects on the Nigerian economy. The inability of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to meet official market demand has driven many towards the parallel market, causing prices to surge due to unprecedented demand for the Naira's currency.

Princess Shola Daibo, a candidate of the Accord Party in the upcoming by-election into the Delta State House of Assembly in Warri-South Constituency 1, has accused the All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission of plotting to rig the election. Daibo stated that forces within the APC had concluded plans to rig the election in favour of their candidate. The Accord Party is fielding Daibo for the election scheduled for Wednesday, 26 April, 2017, by INEC. The assembly seat became vacant following the death of Mrs. Omawumi Udoh at a London hospital. After the seat was declared vacant, INEC announced a by-election for Wednesday, April 26, 2017. The Accord Party has condemned the act of cowardice and warned that any attempt to rig the election will be maximally resisted. The party has also reported that the APC lacked the capacity to match the grassroots spread of the Accord Party in Warri-South and had resorted to deploying machinery to emasculate the party and its candidate. The party has also reported on various other news, such as the Niger coup, fire gutting the house of David Church in Lagos, fake customs CG arrests, and the AFCON 2023 fixtures.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared Tony Nwoye, winner of the August 26, 2017 Anambra State APC primary, as the party's standard bearer in the state governorship election. The decision was made at a meeting of the party's National Working Committee, which considered the report of an appeal panel investigating a petition filed by Senator Andy Uba. The committee stated that the integrity of the exercise was not in dispute. Nwoye had to cancel a press conference to fill the Independent National Electoral Commission's nomination forms before the deadline.

Supporters of Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Dr. Olusegun Abraham clashed during a peaceful protest in Akure, Nigeria. Abraham's supporters were protesting against Akeredolu's candidacy for the November 2016 governorship election. The protesters were attacked by APC youths carrying Akeredolu's posters and weapons. The clash resulted in the destruction of vehicles and deserted Oyemekun Road, where the secretariat was located. No life was lost, but the situation was calmed by additional policemen. Abraham, a preferred candidate of the party's National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, criticized the incident as uncivilized and urged the APC leadership to let the right candidate be chosen. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has resolved the crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the principal officers of the ruling party at the National Assembly, Daily Trust reliably gathered last night.  A fresh crisis erupted in the ruling party on Tuesday when the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, rejected the principal officers of the party announced by both the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. 

Akpabio and Abbas had announced the principal officers of the APC, including the majority leaders, chief whips and their deputies during the plenary. But shortly after the announcement, Adamu was quoted as saying the list did not emanate from the party although the governors of the party under the aegis of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) endorsed the new officers.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has chosen February 26 for its national convention, but stakeholders have warned against forcing the party to hold an exercise that could further polarise members. Chairman of the CECPC and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, acknowledged the roles played by women during electioneering process, but warned against using the convention as a ruse to create a parallel national executive. The CECPC is planning to have a successful convention, but it is impossible due to by-elections and the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has called for better political deals for women. The Election Petitions Tribunal in Lokoja nullified the victory of Jibrin Isah of the APC and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct supplementary elections in the district. The tribunal also upheld the election of Senator Sharafadeen Alli of the APC, dismissing the petition filed by PDP candidate Chief Joseph Tegbe. The South West Young Stakeholders Forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider a list of promising young candidates from various states in the region for the vacant position of the Ministry of Youth Development.

The group in a statement said the vacancy in the Ministry of Youth Development should be allotted to one of them as a reward for their support for the President:
“Highlighting the distribution of ministerial portfolios in the Federal Executive Council, the forum pointed out that Ogun has three representatives, Lagos has two, and other states in the region – Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, and Ondo – each have one representative. “As a result, the list of youth stalwarts presented to President Tinubu was carefully curated through extensive consultations. The lists of candidates are Makinde Araoye (MKD), Seun Olufemi-White, Ayodele Olawande, Bolaji Afeez Repete, Prince Oyekunle Oyewumi, Titilope Ayoka Gbadamosi, Ademola Adeyeye, Abdullahi Dayo Israel, Bayo Adenekan and Dr Seriki Muritala.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to send emissaries to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to investigate his grievances against the party. The party may apply sanctions if found guilty. The Organising Secretary of the Adamawa State chapter of the APC, Ahmed Lawan, said plans to address the issue have been delayed by members of the state exco traveling to Saudi Arabia to observe the hajj. The party is concerned about recent utterances credited to the former vice-president, including his remarks that the party abandoned him. Lawan said the party is surprised by the former vice-president's alleged selflessness and the party's failure to reward him. The party plans to summon a meeting with Atiku and take a decision if he lodges complaints.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has announced that the All Progressives Congress will lead evidence at the election petitions tribunal to show how the Peoples Democratic Party allegedly benefited from electoral fraud during the recent governorship poll. Oshiomhole defended the PDP's candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who was allegedly denied victory in the election, stating that he is not worth 50,000 votes. He expressed satisfaction with the APC's performance in the September 28 election and emphasized that the victory signaled the final political "funeral" of the PDP godfathers. Obaseki promised to run an all-inclusive government and commended the Islamic council for their support before and during the election. He also urged the governor-elect to be resolute in achieving his objectives and to be accessible to the citizens of the state. Obaseki's tenure will end on November 12.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has set aside the Federal High Court's judgement that restrained the federal government from further registering marriages under the Marriage Act, Cap. M6, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004 within some local government areas. The appellate court ruled that both the federal government and local government councils have the legal authority to celebrate, contract, and register marriages between prospective couples. The court held that not one organ of government had the exclusive preserve of contracting and celebrating marriages between prospective couples. The lower court imposed a restriction directing the Ministry of Interior to only conduct, celebrate, and contract marriages in marriage registries in Ikoyi, Lagos, and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which was deemed wrong. The appellate court also retrained the Minister of Interior from further registering marriages contracted or celebrated under the Marriage Act, Cap. M6, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, within the plaintiffs' local government councils area.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has dropped the names of two influential politicians, Muyiwa and Temitope Ilori, from his cabinet list. Aregbesola was re-elected for his second term in office in November 2014 and has run the government without a cabinet since then. The Nigerian Army opened a free medical clinic as part of their commemoration of Military Forces Day in the state, and Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari was there.
