The prices of refined petroleum products across Nigeria are expected to increase following a rise in the global benchmark for crude oil, known as Brent, which climbed to seventy-nine dollars and seventy-six cents per barrel from its previous level in December twenty twenty-four. This upward trend is primarily driven by global geopolitical tensions, including sanctions on Russian oil exports, alongside seasonal demand shifts and supply concerns. Because international crude prices strongly dictate global petroleum product pricing and many local depot owners depend heavily on imports, higher procurement and shipping expenses are expected to be passed down to consumers. Evidence of this shift is already visible at loading depots in Lagos, where the pump or depot price for diesel has recorded notable hikes. Industry experts and energy analysts warn that importers and marketers are poised to further adjust loading and retail prices upward, which will likely lead to a general increase in fuel costs across various regions.

Independent petroleum marketers and energy experts have urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to fast-track the rehabilitation of its twenty-one moribund regional fuel depots and vast pipeline distribution network following the reactivation of domestic refineries in Port Harcourt and Warri. Industry stakeholders argue that relying on private tank farms and transporting petroleum products long distances by road tankers drives up fuel costs, damages road infrastructure, and creates significant operational hazards. Restoring direct pipeline transportation from refineries to regional storage facilities across the country would make petroleum distribution substantially cheaper, safer, and faster. To successfully revive the dilapidated system, experts recommend securing buried pipelines against widespread vandalism, involving host communities in pipeline protection, and attracting private sector capital to fund midstream infrastructure investments, thereby ensuring lower retail fuel prices for consumers nationwide.
