The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has announced plans to improve transparency and accountability within the nation's oil and gas sector by implementing a new advance cargo declaration solution and conducting engineering audits of upstream measurement equipment and facilities in partnership with private energy firms. According to an official statement, the cargo declaration system is designed to track crude oil transportation and exports in real time, prevent theft, eliminate under-declaration, and ensure that only certified petroleum products leave the country. Meanwhile, the engineering audits aim to establish reliable baseline data, upgrade obsolete metering infrastructure, and address critical measurement inaccuracies that have historically contributed to significant oil losses. The Chief Executive of the regulatory commission, Gbenga Komolafe, maintained that these strategic measures directly align with the agency's statutory mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act of twenty twenty-one to secure optimal government revenues and boost national petroleum production.
