General Hospital Isolo was established by Sir Mobolaji Johnson as a Cottage hospital in 1975, which has since evolved into a prominent Secondary Healthcare Facility in Lagos State. The current medical director, a former national officer and president of the Nigerian Medical Association in the early 2020s, has significantly expanded the hospital's capacity over the past seventeen months. Under his leadership, the emergency department grew from a small space into a twenty-eight-bed unit featuring an integrated operating theatre and recovery room. The hospital has also distinguished itself as the only secondary facility in the region with a dedicated fifteen-bed psychiatric unit, staffed by a specialized team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses to address growing mental health challenges. The director believes General Hospital Isolo possesses the space, manpower, and specialist services required to transition into a Tertiary Teaching Hospital, noting it already functions as a training hub for medical, nursing, pharmacy, and physiotherapy interns. Discussing broader healthcare challenges, the director urged the government to prioritize health and education budgets, fund functional health insurance, and empower local pharmacists to manufacture essential drugs domestically rather than relying on expensive imports. He also emphased the need to integrate experienced domestic technical talents into regulated pharmaceutical production. To mark his recent milestone, the hospital organized a comprehensive community medical outreach providing general consultations, laboratory testing, ear, nose, and throat evaluations, and mental health screenings, reinforcing the institution's commitment to giving back to the community.
