The Senate is set to reconvene to discuss the Electoral Act 2022 amendment Bill, following a notice issued yesterday. While critics hoped for a reconsideration of contentious provisions, the Senate has retained its decision against "real-time" result transmission, leaving it to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the transmission mode. Civil society groups, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have urged the Senate to adopt real-time transmission for greater transparency in the electoral process. The Senate also aims to harmonize their version of the Bill with the House of Representatives. The current voting procedure, which integrates manual and technological result transfer, has been called into question due to concerns over transmission clarity, potentially undermining public trust in the electoral process. Both the NBA and NLC have stressed the need for a transparent system to ensure votes are verifiably counted.
