The Kebbi state government has confirmed a suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis that has resulted in twenty-six deaths across four local government areas, specifically Gwandu, Jega, Aliero, and Argungu. During a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Musa Ismaila, reported that health authorities have identified two hundred and forty-eight suspected cases exhibiting symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. In response to the crisis, the state government has released thirty million naira to procure essential medications and supplies, while establishing isolation centers and partnering with international organizations, including the World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, to manage the outbreak. While samples have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja for confirmation, the commissioner has urged the public to follow health safety guidelines and report any symptoms to the nearest medical facility immediately.
