After Tinubu, CBN Governor’s Meeting, Dollar Crashes To N790 At Parallel Market
by Balarabe Alkassim, Sunday M Ogwu, Clement Oloyede & Abiodun Alade
The dollar has crashed to between N805 to N790 at the parallel exchange market on Tuesday Daily Trust can authoritatively report. It started a steady decline from N925 to N930 that it was exchanged in the morning till around 4:00 pm when news about a possible Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervention filtered through to the Bureau De Change (BDC) operators. Recall that the CBN announced plans to take critical decisions to reverse the slide of the naira in the next few days, thereby resulting in significant losses to the speculators. The acting CBN governor, Folashodun Shonubi, dropped the hint on Monday while briefing State House reporters after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Akpabio Under Fire For Linking Soldiers’ Killing To Mercenaries
by Saawua Terzungwe, Abbas Jimoh, Baba Martins & Balarabe Alkassim
Civil society organizations and a security expert have criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for linking the killings of 16 military personnel in Delta State to foreign mercenaries. The troops were killed while on a peace mission to the warring communities of Okuoma and Okoloba. Akpabio spoke during plenary when the Senate resolved to constitute a committee to unravel the circumstances behind the military personnel's killings. He urged a thorough investigation to determine whether the perpetrators were mercenaries outside Nigeria.Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International-Nigeria (TI-Nigeria), criticized Akpabio's comments, stating that a criminal is a criminal regardless of their origin. The Executive Director of the CLEEN Foundation, Gad Peter, said political leaders should be careful about their comments "after incidents or crimes have taken place."
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Ahmad Lawan, described the soldiers' killings as an assault on security and stability of the Niger Delta region. He urged security agencies to investigate the killings, bring the perpetrators to justice, and restore peace and order in the area.

Electoral bill: Fresh controversy as Senate, Reps approve different versions
by Abdullateef Salau, Balarabe Alkassim & Abbas Jimoh
The two houses of the parliament yesterday passed different versions of the Electoral Act Bill; the Senate supplied the re-amended bill for direct mode, whilst the House only gave direct and indirect mode. This has sparked a new debate in the National Assembly. The National Assembly already enacted the measure on November 18; the Commission will keep an eye on it. The Red Chamber changed Clause 84 (which refers to the ways of choosing candidates for elective seats as indirect primaries or consensus). There wasn't any agreement. After the House returned to plenary, Femi Gbajabiamila addressed the amendment and stated that only Clause 84 had been discussed and approved by the House. No other provisions of the electoral act modification had been taken into consideration or approved.

Fuel subsidy: Reps urge FG to implement palliative
by Balarabe Alkassim
The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to implement its promise on putting in place palliative measures to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians. The call followed the adoption of a motion by Aliyu Sani Madaki (NNPP, Kano) at the plenary on Wednesday.Â
Presenting the motion, the lawmaker recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on May 29 announced the removal of fuel subsidy which pushed the pump prices from N194 to over N500 with variations in states. He said there was the need to put in place measures to protect the rights of citizens and prioritise the provision of palliatives to mitigate the challenges that have arisen from the fuel subsidy removal and ensure a more sustainable and inclusive economic framework for the benefit of Nigerians.

Reps declare Nigeria Air Launch fraud, want officials involved prosecuted
by Abdullateef Salau & Balarabe Alkassim
The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation declared the purported launch of Nigeria Air a fraud after the ministry officials and the interim management of the national carrier feigned ignorance of the launch. This has drawn controversy, with Nigerians raising concern about the whereabouts of the aircraft after its unveiling. The interim Managing Director of Nigeria Air, Captain Dapo Olumide, told the lawmakers that the project was not launched as being misconstrued by many Nigerians. He said a chartered aircraft with the inscription of Nigeria Air logo was unveiled to counter the negativity making rounds on social media. The Nigeria Air project is being implemented in secrecy, with Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti) saying it was fraudulently displayed as a new national carrier contrary to court order and international rules.
