Anointed candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the elections for National Assembly leadership positions in Abuja. Senator Godswill Akpabio became President of the Senate with 63 votes, defeating Senator Abdulaziz Yari's 46. Senator Jibrin Barau was elected Deputy President unopposed. In the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas emerged as Speaker with 353 votes, while Benjamin Kalu secured the Deputy Speaker position. The elections adhered to the party's zoning arrangement, with Akpabio representing the South-South and Abbas the North-West. President Bola Tinubu congratulated the elected officials and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislature for effective governance, warning of potential challenges ahead. The election process was described as free and fair, fostering a collegial atmosphere among senators.

About 35 ministries, departments, and agencies of the Federal Government failed to appear before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating alleged employment racketeering. The committee, chaired by Yusuf Gagdi, accused the MDAs of lacking respect for constituted authority and ordered them to provide staff members to serve as desk officers. Gagdi had previously urged the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Budget Office, IPPIS, and the FCC to provide desk officers. The four agencies that appeared before the committee were the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, the National Teachers Institute, the National Commission for Colleges of Education, and the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria. Gagdi criticized the MDAs for applying for a waiver for recruitment without advertising, claiming such waivers were usually used to perpetrate fraud.

Five days to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, the APC leadership had also endorsed the member-elect representing Kaduna, as speakership candidate, while the member-elect from Abia State, clinched the Deputy Speaker slot. Not officially declared its consensus candidate to run against Abbas. While Abbas is from Kaduna State in the North-West, Member-elect for the Ningi/Warji Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, but he simply called for a united front. Both Senate and the House of Representatives, he emphasised that he will perform an open-door policy for everybody. Told The PUNCH that Tinubu appealed to lawmakers to uphold national interest. He didn’t mention anybody’s name to be voted for. Maybe he is appealing, What he told them there and then was that the zoning stands. The two-day meeting between the Federal Government and the organised labour ended in a deadlock on Tuesday, with the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress leaders vowing to begin a nationwide protest against the removal of fuel subsidy.

This came as oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association began an indefinite strike on Tuesday, citing inhumane treatment by the management of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, an agency of the Federal Government.

The strike and planned protest by the organised labour slated for Wednesday (today) over the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government may shut down the country and paralyse the economy.

Oil workers had earlier on Tuesday staged a protest and shut down the commission’s office in Lagos, while also vowing to shut down the agency’s offices nationwide. 

Speaking on the planned strike on Tuesday, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the organised labour had no reason to suspend the planned national protests and strike.

Ajaero spoke a few hours after another round of meeting of the Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives held at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, deadlocked.
