The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned that Delta, Ondo, Sokoto, and 16 other states, as well as 56 communities across Nigeria, are likely to experience heavy rainfall in August. The agency said the heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in affected areas. The affected communities include Aboh in Delta State, Apapa, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Ojo, Surulere, Atani in Anambra state, Ifo, Ota and Sagamu in Ogun state, Lafia and Wamba in Nasarawa state, Ikom and Ogoja in Cross River State. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted three days of cloudiness, rainfall, and thunderstorms across the country. The agency advised airline operators to avail themselves of weather reports and periodic alerts from NiMet for effective planning of their operations. Moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods. The public is advised to take necessary caution and avoid driving and walking through flood waters. NiMet also urged risk and disaster managers, agencies, and individuals to be proactive in averting the loss of lives and properties during the rainy season.

The Federal Government has set out to establish a solid minerals corporation to effectively harness the nation’s mineral resources.Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, who disclosed this at a briefing in Abuja yesterday, also spoke of plans to review all mining licenses in the country and the need to establish mines police.He said the corporation would be similar to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC Limited, NNPCL, adding that the government was ready to take the “bull by the horns” to “reap the trillion dollars worth of minerals under the ground” across the country.He said:  “Mining is big business. Nigeria must assert its presence in this environment by replicating its strategic positioning in the petroleum sector by setting up a corporate body that plays in this field.“Consequently, the ministry shall work towards the incorporation of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Corporation.“This is a corporate body that will have subsidiaries doing business in the seven priority areas that require immediate intervention and focus: gold, coal, limestone, bitumen, lead, iron-ore and baryte.“They prefer to continue to operate as illegal miners. For the last time, let me declare that the Ministry is giving such persons 30 days grace to join a miners’ co-operative or find another vocation to do.“On the expiration of the period, the full weight of the law will fall on anyone seen on a mining site without a determinable status. 

Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked 167 plots of land in high-brow districts of Abuja due to the refusal or failure of their allottees to develop them. The revocations were issued in a notice issued by the administration, which stated that the plots were revoked due to continued contravention of the terms of development of the Right of Occupancy. Wike had vowed to restore the master plan of the territory and revoke plots that had not been developed or whose ground rents had not been paid for years.

Nigeria's petroleum industry regulators and operators have formally effected a subsidy withdrawal, causing retail prices to increase by about 170 per cent to N500 per litre. The new price template took effect after a deadlock in Abuja. Borno and Yobe states have the highest petrol prices, while Lagos has the least. Depots sell the product at N470 per litre, with about N300 per litre going to stakeholders in the value chain. NNPC Limited has adjusted pump prices at its retail stations to N537 per litre, reflecting market dynamics. The company is committed to ensuring a ceaseless supply of products and apologizes for any inconvenience caused. Independent marketers and major marketers dispensed at N540 per litre. IPMAN Public Relations Officer Chinedu Ukadike said the group is ready for deregulation and is ready for competition.
