An Akwa Ibom High Court in Uyo sentenced University of Uyo professor Ignatius Uduk to three years in prison for election fraud during the 2019 polls. After a five-year legal battle, the judge found him guilty of lying under oath and publishing fake election results while serving as an election official, though he cleared him of a charge regarding forced result announcements. Even though the professor showed up in a wheelchair pleading for mercy, explaining he had already lost his job and salary in 2020, the court handed down three-year sentences for each charge, which he will serve at the same time. His lawyers are reviewing the ruling to decide on an appeal, while prosecutors praised the verdict as a clear warning to anyone tempted to rig elections.
