The National Universities Commission directed Vice-Chancellors of federal universities to resume academic activities on January 18, 2021, following instructions from the Presidential Task Force on Coronavirus Disease 2019, which came right after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its ten-month strike on December 23, 2020. In an official statement signed by Deputy Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, the Commission instructed university employees on Grade Level 12 and below to continue staying at home for five weeks as previously mandated by the Federal Government to curb the spread of the virus. Furthermore, the Commission emphasized that all institutions must strictly follow the safety protocols outlined by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and warned university administrations not to shorten or disrupt the full academic semester cycle, ensuring they maintain total compliance with the approved educational and quality assurance standards set by the National Universities Commission.
