The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have announced a renegotiated 2025 agreement intended to resolve ongoing disputes in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, which have led to frequent strikes. This agreement is the result of negotiations started in 2017 that aimed to update the 2009 FG–ASUU pact. Under the new deal, academic staff salaries will be increased by 40% effective January 1, 2026, supported by a new Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance to enhance productivity and curb brain drain. The agreement also introduces a new Professorial Cadre Allowance for senior academics. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa emphasized the government's commitment to improving academic conditions, while ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna highlighted ongoing issues of government interference in university autonomy and inadequate funding for research. Despite the agreement being a significant step, ASUU warned that structural and governance problems still threaten the sustainability of the university system, urging for better implementation of university autonomy and adequate research funding.
