The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, announced that three out of six newly approved major cancer treatment centers equipped with advanced technology will be officially opened by May 2025 to improve tertiary healthcare services across the nation. During a television interview, he explained that the government has also initiated ten additional diagnostic centers, upgraded over two hundred tertiary facilities with modern medical equipment like Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography scanners, and established or expanded several federal medical centers and teaching hospitals to accommodate Nigeria’s growing population. This expansion comes in response to alarming health data showing tens of thousands of annual cancer deaths and over one hundred thousand new cases every year, with breast, prostate, and cervical cancers being the most commonly diagnosed forms.
