House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has urged the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend their planned strike and allow the Green Chamber to intervene in their dispute with the Federal Government. The NARD had embarked on a warning strike before the inauguration of the Tinubu administration, demanding a 200-percent increase in salaries and allowances, payment of salary arrears, implementation of the CONMEAS salary structure, new hazard allowance, domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act, and payment of medical residency training funds to its members in state tertiary health facilities. After suspending the strike, the doctors issued a fresh two-week ultimatum for the government to meet its demands. Abbas said the doctors' decision to meet with the House showed their faith and confidence in the lawmakers' capacity to intervene and resolve the lingering dispute. He set up an ad hoc committee chaired by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere to address the issues raised by the NARD and give the House leadership two weeks to find solutions.
