The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has clarified that the reappointment of Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha as Director-General was lawfully approved by President Bola Tinubu in line with the National Biotechnology Development Agency (Establishment) Act, 2022. In a statement issued by the Press Secretary, Toyin Omozuwa, the agency dismissed media reports questioning the legitimacy of the renewal, affirming that the approval was officially communicated through a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, on November 6, 2024. NBRDA described the claims by the Independent Public Service Accountability Watch and the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions as baseless and without legal merit. The agency highlighted Mustapha’s achievements in enhancing biotechnology research, promoting indigenous pharmaceutical production, and mentoring young scientists during his first tenure. It further stressed that his reappointment, effective October 31, 2024, was based on merit, continuity, and demonstrated leadership, urging the media to verify facts before publication to preserve public confidence in governance.
