Nigerian Police have confirmed the arrest of two suspected Boko Haram terrorists on a mission to attack former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's residence in Yola, Adamawa State. Jibrilla Mohammed was arrested at the residence and his accomplice, who confessed to being a member of the Boko Haram sect. The terrorists have been working to eliminate Atiku for a long time and may continue until their mission is completed.

Twenty-eight people have been killed in separate attacks on communities in Kaduna and Niger States by bandits. While 16 were killed and 40 houses razed by the attackers in Southern Kaduna, 12 persons were killed by bandits in Niger State, who struck in Shiroro local government area.The troops of the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces who responded to the distress calls from the area also fell into an ambush as they mobilised to the scene of the attack. Those killed were Elizabeth Ayuba, Veronica Auta, Bege Daniel, Kephas Waje, Promise Jacob, Damaris Istifanus, Hauwa Joshua, Dogara Gambo, Lidia Ishaya, Michael Achi and Gabriel Michael. The co-convener, concerned Shiroro Youths of the Niger State, Sani Abubakar Yusuf Kokki said, "rampaging hydra headed, venomous, murderous and heartless terrorists well-armed with assorted sophiscated and dangerous weapons stormed Galadima Kogo, Shiroro local government area, Niger State in broad daylight and unleased mayhem on their victims at sight including unsuspecting unarmed members of the community". The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Tin Can Island command reported on Wednesday that it had seized 145 kilogrammes of Indian hemp being smuggled into the nation by "merchants of death" in addition to eight containers filled with cutlasses. Oloyede claimed that the matchetes were seized because of national security concerns and that no end-user certificate from the NSA's office had been issued for the importation of such devices. The Ministry of Interior must ensure that correctional facilities and institutions nationwide are well-equipped with security apparatus and put in place programs that will positively alter and correctively reconfigure the attitude of those handling convicts in their custody. Ex-convicts should not be abandoned and condemned to loneliness and death after they leave the correctional centre, as it may damage their mentality, psyche and self-esteem. The government and other concerned authorities must provide an enabling environment for ex-convicts to live well and responsibly.

Boko Haram suspects reportedly plotting to attack the Yola, Adamawa State residence of former Vice-President  Atiku Abubakar, have been arrested. A 29-year-old suspect, Jubrila Mohammed, who confessed to being a Boko Haram member from Damboa in Borno State, was first arrested at the gate of Atiku’s residence while trying to carry out the attack at about 9 p.m. on Sunday. After his arrest, three other persons suspected to be his accomplice were also nabbed.

In a statement, the media office of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections narrated what transpired. “We wish to alert the Nigerian public that at about 9:44 pm on Sunday, 23 July, 2023 a man seeking to confirm the residence of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar in Yola was apprehended at the gate of the residence. The man who was apprehended by security operatives at the residence of Atiku Abubakar was later handed over to the police.

Four girls kidnapped by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have been freed. The suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists released four girls from the 22 women and two men they abducted in three communities of Chibok local government area of Borno State. ISWAP terrorists had attacked Pemi on January 21, 2022, Kautikari on January 14 after the previous one on Korohuma in December 30,2021, where 22 women and two men were abducted, while four persons were killed as several houses were set ablaze. The four freed girls were among those abducted on Friday, 14th January, 2022. Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum was in Chibok town following the recent attacks on the three communities. He met families of the 22 women and two men abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP during the attack. After meeting the families, the governor interfaced with heads of security agencies and discussed gaps and ways to enhance security in the communities.

The Southeast group, Cultural Credibility Development Initiative, has complained to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) about the 'strangulation of Igbo land with checkpoints' and the "suffocation caused by the humongous number of checkpoints in Igboland". The group has demanded that these 'security' posts be reduced by 75 per cent. Security officers at checkpoints have been accused of human rights abuse, including whipping women and searching traditional rulers. Vehicles, from motorcycles to large trucks, are forced to pay varying sums according to type and size of goods. The question is how can the security agencies receive cooperation and intelligence while they behave in ways that generate distrust and ill feeling against them? Modern technology has reduced the human factor in checking people and vehicles for illegal items, but those who would gain from not adopting this method will not let it happen. The menace of extortionate security men at checkpoints is nationwide, and police chiefs have directed their officers and men to desist from mounting checkpoints unless they are approved for specific reasons. In late September 2017, IGP Ibrahim Idris ordered that checkpoints be dismantled to ensure ease of business and free passage of goods and travellers.

Moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods. The public is advised to take necessary caution and avoid driving and walking through flood waters. NiMet also urged risk and disaster managers, agencies, and individuals to be proactive in averting the loss of lives and properties during the rainy season.

The Abducted Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. Federal Otokito, has regained freedom five days after he was kidnapped from his Otuokpoti community residence in Ogbia council. The Bayelsa Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ben Nebolisa, and the state Director of State Security Services, Mr. Mohammed Abdullahi, presented Mr. Otokito to Governor Douye Diri at Government House, Yenagoa. Diri announced the deposition of the paramount ruler, Chief A.C.T Wongo, and appointed Chief Rescue Abe in an acting capacity. He also sacked the community's development committee chairman, Azibalua Amon, and replaced him with Jerry Offor in acting capacity. Officers of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, on Thursday night, quelled a violent protest that erupted following the alleged killing of a fashion designer by an operative of the Department of State Services who shot intermittently and injured several people. One of our correspondents gathered that a customer brought the DSS official to the victim’s shop for allegedly failing to deliver some clothes on an agreed date. A trader in the market, who did not want her name in print for fear of being victimised, said some of the fashion designer’s colleagues, who learnt about the incident, intervened but their interference did not go down well with the DSS operative. She noted that the operative was arrested and detained by the police after he allegedly shot and killed the fashion designer. Responding to the development in a statement, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh said, In an incident at Garki International Market on September 7, 2023, an altercation arose between market occupants and certain individuals, including a DSS personnel and a tailor named Muhammad Habibu. The Garki Divisional Police station mobilised officers in response to a received distress call reporting the invasion of the market by these individuals, who fired shots at a tailor known as Mubarak Mubarak. However, in a statement, the spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunanya, said the secret police was investigating the matter.

The Ebonyi State government has declared a former House of Representatives member, Hon. Linus Okorie, wanted over alleged provocative publication on his Facebook page, which resulted in violence and the killing of an Ebubeagu official, Sunday Nwafor, in Ekawoke Community, Ikwo Council on January 9, 2022. The recent demand for presidential amnesty to herdsmen and bandits in Nigeria has sparked reactions, with some Niger Delta activists arguing that there is no justification for comparing them to the Niger Delta freedom fighters of the past. They argue that herdsmen and bandits are criminals and cannot be equated to those who fought to liberate their people from oppressive Nigerian governments. One activist, Joseph Evah, disagrees with the proposal, stating that they are already enjoying amnesty in disguise. He also notes that the Federal Government gave them amnesty during President Goodluck Jonathan's time, but they have been collecting billions of naira in the name of nomadic education. He believes that the elites in the North are using the name of nomadic education to send their children abroad for more education. Another activist, Ankio Briggs, believes that the Niger Delta people are in a sad situation, comparing their agitation with businessmen who have decided to kill, rape, and occupy land. He blames politicians and leaders for running for presidency without knowing what they are supposed to do with these things.

A mechanic named Yahaya Muhammed Galadima (25), who had his two hands amputated by gunmen, described his ordeal to Daily Trust.Galadima is at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia right now getting medical attention."We were ambushed before Yelwa while returning.Both of us tumbled from my motorbike before we realised what was happening, and my son suffered injuries to his left leg. President Muhammadu Buhari has recounted the attempt by terrorists on his life in 2014, when he was travelling from Kaduna to Katsina, his hometown. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has promised that security challenges in the South-East region will be halted within two minutes of his regaining freedom. Unknown man who is thought to be in his 60s was discovered hanging from a tree in Kano's Kumbotso Local Government Area's Gaida Yankusa neighbourhood. Locals claim that the man was discovered hanging from a tree as they were leaving to go to the mosque to participate in morning prayers. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has alerted members of the public to a New Year scheme to deliver ransomware to targeted organizational networks. The cybercrime group has been mailing out USB thumb drives to many organizations in the hope that recipients will plug them into their PCs and install the ransomware. The USB drives contain so-called 'BadUSB' attacks, which allow an attacker to reprogram a USB drive to emulate a keyboard to create keystrokes and commands on a computer. Attack tools are also installed in the process that allow for exploitation of personal computers, lateral movement across a network, and installation of additional malware. The attack has been seen in the US where the USB drives were sent in the mail with a message impersonating the US Department of Health and Human Services and claimed to be a COVID-19 warning. However, ngCERT has offered recommendations that will enable corporate and individual networks to mitigate the impact of this new cyber-attack and be protected from the ransomware.

Vandals have caused the shutdown of over seven power plants in less than two months, with the Trans-Forcardos Pipeline (TFP) and TotalEnergies pipeline (NOPL Line) being the most affected. This is coming as transmission and distribution bottlenecks pushed average stranded electricity generation to 2,248.50 megawatts in 2021. Vandalism is a huge drain on the country, with Nigeria losing almost 200 million barrels of crude oil in the first 11 months of 2021. Joint security forces in Anambra State have killed two gunmen terrorizing parts of the state, while also recovering weapons, vehicles, and other items. The operation involved a gun battle with criminals, neutralizing two of the armed men and escaping with injuries. The recovery occurred after a distress call on July 23, 2022, along the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway near Okija Nkwo Market. The Defence Headquarters has reported that troops have killed 36 terrorists and arrested 143 criminals in the last two weeks, while also rescuing 140 kidnapped citizens across Nigeria. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, disclosed this during the biweekly briefing of the military in Abuja on Thursday. Troops of Operation Safe Haven recovered three AK-47 rifles, three Dane guns, one locally-fabricated pistol, one locally-made gun, 23 rounds of 7.62mm special, one cartridge, three mobile phones, a piece of camouflage, and a jackknife. Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke recovered one pistol, 40 rounds of 7.62mm special, four rounds of 7.62mm NATO, two G3 magazines, one vehicle, one motorcycle, one mobile phone, and a pair of black boots. Additionally, troops neutralized one terrorist, arrested 13 suspects, and rescued nine kidnapped hostages. Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji recovered one AK47 rifle, four AK47 rifle magazines, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, one motorcycle, and 80 livestock. 20 kidnapped hostages were freed by troops of Operation Hadarin Daji. The military also arrested 15 oil thieves and recovered the sum of N3.17m in the Niger Delta region. Troops also destroyed 61 dugout pits, 32 wooden boats, 87 storage tanks, one speedboat, 32 cooking ovens, three outboard engines, one generator, two pumping machines, and 36 illegal refining sites. The recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages were handed over to the relevant authorities for further action.

The African Union, United Nations and Western countries have condemned the military coup d'état against President Roch Marc Christian Kabore in Burkina Faso, calling for the release of the deposed President and members of his cabinet.
