President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the establishment of the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Trust Fund (NDITF) a private sector investments window with Nigerians in the Diaspora to support direct investments in the country. President Buhari also pledged support for the establishment of the Diaspora Intervention Fund to support the commission for fulfill its mandate. The President Buhari added: “As we launch the compendium of excellent Nigerians today, we are also celebrating some of our best, nationally and globally. The compendium is birthed out of the necessity to recognize, celebrate and showcase Nigerian in the Diaspora who are doing great things in their host countries and also contributing to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

The Nigeria Customs Service has seized a total of 206,838 bags of rice valued at N2 billion in the last one year, data of seizures obtained by Daily Trust has shown. Daily Trust had reported how renewed rice smuggling through the country’s borders is currently threatening the federal government’s efforts towards local production. Analysis of data by Daily Trust show that the seizures were done between May 2022 to April 2023 with the highest number of seizure coming in September 2022 as the Service seized 96,312 bags of rice.

The recent trend in Nigeria is that most Nigerians want to run away, and the most preferred country of destination is Canada. Leaders are not comfortable keeping their kids in the country they are leading, and life is becoming unbearable. Academics are seen as the torchbearers of every nation and should be able to lead us out of challenging situations, but there are several research centres headed by academics but no research output. This raises the question of who really are we and what will we do if we get to the National Assembly or the presidency. Nigeria is facing serious economic and technological challenges and no functional research in its institutes. Prof. Ibrahim Bello Kano's recent statement suggests that the university atmosphere is now heavy with officialdom, office-seeking, and clique groups, threatening to take over academic and research endeavors. The union of academics is not different, as members must belong to a clique to be part of the excos or to make the union's list for elective positions. Those at the middle and lower levels are not interested in the system and are looking for an opportunity to cheat it. The university is not the problem, but the people in the universities fighting for selfish interests.
