CLO Vows To Mobilise Nigerians Against Bad Economic Policies
by Onwuka Nzeshi
The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has vowed to mobilize Nigerians to resist the current administration's harsh economic policies, claiming counter action is necessary to save citizens from further poverty and extinction. President Comrade Igho Akeregha warned the nation to review the state of the nation and the plight of citizens. Akeregha expressed dismay at President Bola Tinubu's harsh economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and taxes. He recalled that the government did not insulate citizens from the hardship triggered by the sudden increase in petrol pump prices. The CLO president criticized the government's palliative package, which turned out to be a poorly conceived scheme designed to enhance the comfort of the political class rather than cushioning the pains of the already impoverished citizens. He emphasized that Nigerians are used to tolerating suffering and that if they do not rise up and say enough, things will only get worse. Akeregha emphasized that the CLO has a duty to mobilize Nigerians to fight for their rights, stating that the right to life is inalienable and given by God. He criticized the N35 billion allocated to the National Judicial Council (NJC) in the post-subsidy palliative package, stating that it was meant to compromise the judiciary.

by Bolaji Akinyemi: Fountain of ideas By Ray Ekpu
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi has just been enrolled as a member of the octogenarian club and Nigerians are celebrating him on various platforms. His contributions to Nigeria's development span the space of diplomacy, international relations, foreign policy, and domestic affairs. He was born in 1942 just as the bombs of the Second World War were dropping, and his path to good education was paved early. He became a professor of political science at age 41 and was chosen by General Murtala Muhammed to give muscle to the dynamic foreign policy he dreamt of for Nigeria. Akinyemi was appointed Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) at the young age of 33. He introduced bilateral dialogue with the Soviet Union, the Chinese, and the United States, Scandinavia and Brazil. He also introduced a town-and-gown forum called the Nigerian Forum, which was headed by the Director General and made up of eggheads in the foreign policy space and journalists. The forum discussed mainly foreign policy issues, but sometimes sank its credibility.

According to the Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) at Benue State University in Makurdi, tainted food from inadequate storage in sub-Saharan Africa has caused 1.5 billion episodes of diarrhoea and three million fatalities every year. Dr. Barnabas Ikyo, the center's director, stated that a United Nations (UN) survey revealed that 95% of agricultural research funding is devoted to boosting production, with only 5% going towards lowering post-harvest loss. CSOs urge NASS to retransmit electoral bill before Friday, ask Buhari to assent within one week
by Gabriel Ewepu
Stakeholders at the Townhall Forum on the Electoral Bill 2022 argued that the National Assembly should retransmit the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to President Muhammadu Buhari in the interest of Nigerians, as it will improve the integrity of the 2023 general elections. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, maintained that the Nigerians yearn for new electoral law before the 2023 elections, but cautioned NASS against overriding the President. He argued that the bill contains good things that will enhance the electoral process and improve voter confidence. The National President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, urged the National Assembly to be meticulous in effecting corrections and discard the contentious issue of direct primary and retransmit the Bill to Mr President. He also expressed optimism that with a good legal framework put in place, the process will improve. However, he warned that if the right thing is not done, the 12 million workers who are members of the NLC and a formidable force could be affected.

This was declared by Dr. Bitrus Pogu, the national president of the MBF, in a communique that was published at the conclusion of a meeting that the NEF organised under the auspices of the Northern Leaders of Thought (NLT), where they resisted the transfer of power to the South in 2023. Prof. Adamu Usman, the chairman of the governing board of the Universal Basic Education Council, has charged that state governments have abdicated their duty to provide money for basic education in their jurisdictions to the council. Usman claims that because states don't pay their matching contributions and don't use the money properly, they don't seem passionate about sponsoring basic education. The Federal Government established UBEC as an interventionist organisation to help states fulfil their fundamental duty of providing world-class, uniform, high-quality basic education throughout Nigeria. A middle-aged woman named Mama Dada burned herself on fire because she couldn't repay a loan from LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited. Since then, we've learned that the microfinance institution mentioned in the article wasn't LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited.

The Overseer of the KSSQA, Mr. Idris Aliyu, explained that the six-year old girl was violated within the school premises and the school authority covered it up. Governor Nasir El-Rufai has ordered that the Islamiyah be shut down indefinitely until the investigation is concluded and the culprit produced. The Head Teacher of the Islamiyah School in Kaduna denied the allegation of a rape, but the grandmother of the survivor, Hajiya Batul Gambo, insisted that her grandchild was violated. A medical report signed by Dr. A Raji confirmed Gambo's claim, attributing the bleeding to virginal bruising of the labia minora, bilaterally periurethral bruising, heamatoma of the clitoris and laceration of the hymen. Poverty, Social Exclusion Hamper Women
by Igho Oyoyo
According to Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), poverty. The lack of social inclusion, the distance to educational institutions, the low quality of the education provided, and gender inequities all operate against women in leadership positions in Africa. The Minister made this statement at the Africa Women's Leadership Organization's 2022 Open Year Ball in Abuja, shortly after being named the organization's life patron. "Having more women in leadership positions has a significant impact on the bottom line," she asserted. Compared to men, women enter positions of leadership far less frequently.

Reactions Continue To Trail Verdict On Oromonis Death.
by Henry Tyohemba
Nigerians have continued to voice their perspectives on the topic after feeling dissatisfied with the director of public prosecution's decision in the case of the late Sylvester Oromoni. After two autopsies conducted by a consultant pathologist at the central hospital in Warri, Clement Vhriterhire, revealed that Sylvester died of "acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication in the background of blunt force trauma," legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Adetutru Oshinusi, cleared the suspects recently. After hearing from the parties, the presiding magistrate, Mikail Kadir, commanded the police to immediately make copies of any statements obtained during the investigation available to interested parties. He also instructed solicitors to submit the necessary requests for certified true copies of any pertinent documents in the court's possession.n.

Russia, China block UN support for ECOWAS sanctions on Mali
by Saxone Akhaine
Russia and China have blocked the United Nations Security Council from supporting a decision by the West African economic bloc ECOWAS to impose new sanctions on Mali, after its military leaders proposed staying in power for up to five years before staging elections. Three African council members, Kenya, Ghana and Gabon, spoke to reporters to back the regional bloc's position. France, Mali's former colonial power, and the United States have also expressed support for the ECOWAS sanctions. ECOWAS has taken strong actions to end the crisis in Mali, and the US, US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and Algeria have called on the military to negotiate with ECOWAS. China has expressed support for Mali's military government, while Russia has rejected the proposed council statement as unbalanced and expressed sympathy to the government. France has condemned the deployment of mercenaries from Russia's Wagner Group, and expressed regret that Mali's transitional authorities are unable to restore government control in many parts of the country.

Senate unearths N14.7bn PHCN money 'hidden' in banks
by Adedapo Adesanya
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has begun an investigation of N14.7 billion proceeds of privatisation of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) allegedly hidden in commercial banks by the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE). The committee is acting on an audit query in the 'Auditor-General for the Federation's Annual Report on Non-Compliance/Internal Control Weaknesses Issues in Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government of Nigeria for the Year Ended 31st December 2019'. The query stated that the funds from the PHCN privatisation were still in the banks as of December 31, 2016, whereas the privatisation had been concluded since 2013. The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) is seeking to recover the sum of N14,720,396,432.43, being proceeds of the PHCN, and remit same to CRF. However, two separate sums of N3,231,984.73 allegedly held in Fidelity Bank Plc and N18,199,520.87 held in Stanbic Bank were unaudited bank balances that were actually no longer in existence as of the date of the audited financial statements or asked questions. The probe is expected to reveal whether the BPE's claims are true or not.

Thieves break into Arik airplane in Lagos, strip cockpit gadgets
by Wole Oyebade
Suspected thieves have broken into an Arik Air aircraft parked at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, stealing valuable gadgets. This has left the Boeing 737 aircraft grounded without its Flight Management Computer (FMC) and other accessories. Aviation stakeholders believe the break-in and removal of the FMC could only have been done by an insider with technical know-how. Arik Air filed an occurrence report with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over attempted robbery of its taxing aircraft by unknown men. Former Commandant of the Lagos Airport in the '90s, Group Capt. John Ojikutu, said there are houses behind the airport perimeter fences that have exceeded standard security limits. FAAN security should conduct random checks on all those carrying On Duty Cards (ODC) to fish out unauthorised persons.

We’ve removed obstacles to growth, Tinubu tells investors
by Bolaji Ogundele,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rekindled foreign investors' confidence in Nigeria's economic potential and opportunities, stating that his administration has removed obstacles to growth. He spoke at the New Global Financing Pact Summit in Paris, France, where he joined other world leaders. Tinubu promised to embark on more reforms, including power, infrastructure development, agriculture, and SMEs. He also sought the support of the United Kingdom in the war against insecurity. The president assured investors that the ongoing reforms would be sustained, targeting a more competitive economy strong enough to attract FDI. He emphasized Nigeria's readiness for global business and the development of infrastructure, health, energy, and agriculture. AfreximBank President Benedict Oramah and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development President Odile Renaud-Basso commended Tinubu for the bold steps in removing fuel subsidies and unifying exchange rates. Tinubu also joined world leaders on the consensus for redesigning the global financial architecture, which will favor poverty reduction, debt restructuring, and more consideration for vulnerable countries affected by climate change and COVID-19.

What Nigerians want in 2022
by Terhemba Daka
Nigerians from all walks of life have expressed their opinions on what should be done to rescue the nation from the myriad of challenges currently stunting its development and threatening its existence as one corporate entity. Secretary-General of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Dr. Kunle Olajide, said the country's first priority should be a new federal constitution, while Elder Anthony Sani said the political leadership must come together and sublimate their energies in making Nigeria feel young again with the promise of glorious days ahead. Nkoyo Toyo, former Nigerian Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Madam Becky Oiza, a mother of three, called for the government to reduce prices of goods to improve the standard of living of Nigerians and reduce criminal activities.
