The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threatened to shut down the economy without giving notice to the government if petrol pump prices were increased again. The NLC raised alarm over the alleged hijacking of the duties of the Ministry of Labour and Employment by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Federal Ministry of Justice. President Bola Tinubu responded by stating that Nigeria is concerned about economic hardship and is working to ameliorate the situation. Oil marketers urged the Federal Government to act urgently to halt the slide in the value of the naira against the dollar, which had significantly impacted the pump price of petrol. NLC President Joe Ajaero issued the threat while responding to the advice of the Director, Trade Union Services, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Emmanuel Igbinosun, that Labour should explore due process before embarking on strike. Ajaero warned that Nigerians had suffered enough from government policies and would not tolerate any increase in petroleum pump prices that would worsen the situation. He also emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police is now performing the duty of the Ministry of Labour, and the Ministry of Labour should know they don't have the right to usurp their function.
