Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Supreme Court highlighted the declining reading culture and legal knowledge among lawyers as a critical issue for the profession during the Legacy Dialogue 2.0 in Abuja. He expressed concern over lawyers who, despite having court judgments, fail to read them, which leads to public displays of ignorance. Agim emphasized that knowing the law aids in preventing unethical behavior. He dismissed claims of judges being part of secret cults, advocating for integrity as the foundation of the judiciary. Justice Mabel Segun-Bello warned about the exodus of young lawyers from courtroom practice due to poor remuneration and lack of mentorship, threatening the future of legal continuity. She called for established mentorship structures within the profession. The JASAN Foundation's president, Johnny Agim (SAN), and Ondo State Attorney-General, Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), underscored the necessity of institutionalizing mentorship as a responsibility for seasoned lawyers to cultivate future leaders in the legal field.
