At least six students returning to school are feared dead following a boat accident on the Buruku River in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident occurred on Monday night when an overloaded wooden boat capsized while conveying passengers across the river. Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to excessive loading, poor regulation, and night travel, noting that the vessel was carrying dozens of passengers, vehicles, and goods. Five bodies were recovered, while search efforts continued for one missing victim. The deceased were reportedly students from Ukum Local Government Area travelling to Gboko. Local authorities confirmed the incident, while the Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy described the tragedy as a reminder of the risks associated with unsafe inland water transport. A full investigation has been ordered to establish responsibility and possible safety violations. The accident has renewed calls for improved river transport safety and long-promised bridge construction across the Buruku River.
