The Nigerian Senate passed the second reading of a bill sponsored by Senator Ekpeyong Asuquo of Cross River South to establish the South-South Development Commission, despite previous rejection by the House of Representatives over concerns that it duplicated the role of the Niger Delta Development Commission. Prominent supporters, including Senator Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa Central and nearly ten other senators, clarified that while the existing regional commission operates on a resource-based model tied strictly to oil-producing states, this proposed development commission will focus on broader regional integration, resolving infrastructure deficits, addressing militancy and communal crises, and tackling environmental challenges using allocated government funds, grants, and donations.
