The Independent National Electoral Commission is considering a policy to withdraw and destroy Permanent Voter Cards that have remained uncollected for a decade, starting with those issued in 2015, because millions of unclaimed cards are clogging the voter management system. While some legal experts and political parties support the plan to declutter the register and prevent fraud, other parties and stakeholders object, arguing that destroying the cards would waste taxpayer money and that the commission should instead focus on public awareness and restoring voter trust. Additionally, the electoral commission is exploring long-term plans to modernise the voting process by gradually phasing out plastic cards and enabling voter identification using temporary slips and biometric accreditation.
