The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians through supportive policies and programmes. Speaking in Benin, Edo State, during the distribution of food items under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), she noted that the outreach was made possible by donations from a public-spirited company and the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa). Represented by the wife of the Vice President and National Vice Chairman of RHI, Hajia Nana Shettima, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted that RHI, since its launch in 2023, has made meaningful progress in empowering women and youths. She added that more initiatives will be carried out across RHI's five focus areas: Agriculture, Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, and Social Investment—all aimed at complementing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

OPEC and its allies have agreed to reduce production targets between January and December 2024 by 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd), bringing total production to 40.463 million bpd. Saudi Arabia announced a production cut of one million bpd, while other members extended earlier cuts until the end of the year. OPEC+ aims to achieve and sustain a stable oil market and adjust overall crude oil production to 40.46 mb/d from January 1 to December 2024. The OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting reaffirmed the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee's mandate to review global oil market conditions, production levels, and conformity. The meeting emphasized the importance of adhering to full conformity and compensating countries producing above the required production level. The 36th OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting is scheduled for November 26, 2023 in Vienna.tion.”

A Rivers State High Court has remanded the Managing Director of Saipem Contracting, Mr. Walter Peviana; and Kelechi Chinakwe in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre over an alleged conspiracy to cheat and with intent to defraud the Rivers State Government of $130m.

Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has announced a $134 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to boost food security through dry season farming. The project will support between 150,000 to 250,000 wheat farmers with a 50% input subsidy, aiming to reduce food inflation and increase domestic consumption. The government will invest in irrigation infrastructure projects to optimize water usage and mitigate challenges posed by the dry season. The Wheat Development Programme, in partnership with the Federal Government, will expand the capacity of over 42,000 smallholder farmers. The Jigawa State government will provide free high-quality extension services to wheat farmers and has arranged with the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) to provide a guarantee for the balance of 37.5% of the cost of inputs supplied.

Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has slated ita Town Hall Meeting for the North-West geo-political zone at the Tahir Guest Palace (Hotel), Kano. The Nigerian Guild Editors announced its plans to hold town hall meetings across the six geo-political zones, kicking off the meeting in the South-West zone last November in Lagos. In a statement by its president, Mustapha Isah and the general secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren, in Abuja, the professional body of all the editors in Nigeria. With a theme: "Agenda Setting for Sustainable Democratic Culture", the guild said the objective of the meeting, which is being supported by the United States (US) Embassy in Nigeria, is to assess the media performance in consolidating Nigeria's democratic-citizns' verdict and outlining media agenda for the future.

Over 112 illegal refineries have been discovered in the creeks of Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Chairman, mr. Samuel Nwanosike said at the week end that most of the site were located in the Ogbodo community of the state. The government said his primary concern was to ensure that the health of the people were not jeopardised. Wike berated the police for being complicit in the criminal act of ilegal oil bunkering saying they were not commited to the fight to stop the operations.Wike frowned at the inability of the police to arrest members of the illegal bunkering cartel operating at athe Ibaa community in the Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly backed the emergence of an Igbo president in 2019, despite mixed reactions from prominent Igbo politicians. Some argue that the challenges facing Nigeria have gone beyond who becomes president and that the best approach is to restructure the country and allow each region to develop at its own pace. However, some believe that the Igbo cannot be considered serious when they argue that they are marginalized, as they have always been part of the leadership. For instance, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe supported military President Ibrahim Babangida as de facto vice president from 1985 to 1986, and Dr. Alex Ekwueme served as vice president from 1979 to 1983. Additionally, several Igbo sons and daughters have held sensitive positions in government since the return of civil rule in 1999. Some also believe that the Igbo have been deliberately relegated to the background in politics, arguing that their achievements can be attributed to their resourcefulness, industry, and hard work.

In order to protect the National Cake, which is being stolen by a select few and leaving millions of people disenchanted with nationalism, Nigeria must agree to the Nigerian Promise to be FLH in 2022. Infrastructure has deteriorated as a result of leadership failing to see that the colonial 4–7 year cycle of maintenance was immensely profitable for contractor/civil servant cartels and civilians alike. Nigeria's ability to create infrastructure and superstructures has been hindered by politics and theft, and financial problems predict social aspects like poverty, unemployment, and happiness indexes linked to security indexes. Nigeria must put an end to terrorism and corruption in 2022 and elect a younger generation of top political figures for the years 2023–2027 if it is to advance.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern about how best to protect the electoral process in 2023. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, assured the nation that the commission would focus on the best way to secure the process in the most professional way. He praised security agencies for protecting recent elections and the commission's facilities against "malicious" attacks. The CVR exercise has now entered its third quarter, and the commission is looking forward to activating the additional 1,862 centres nationwide to make it easier for citizens to exercise their right to register as voters. This meeting will review the security situation to activate 2,673 registration centres nationwide.

According to Dr. Babangida Aliyu, a former governor of Niger State, the opposition People Democratic Party has decided to choose its presidential candidate for the 2023 election from one of the northern regions of the nation despite its agreement that any candidate may run for office. Speaking to the supporters, Aliyu said, "In our zoning agreement, we have agreed to re-zone the North as requested by others. However, we have also agreed written openly as a result of what has happened that any candiata from any part of the country can now run in this election."If the PDP could unite and settle on a certain candidate for chairman. It implies that a single contender could have challenged it.

 

A Veterant journalist, Tony Oyatedor, has advised Nigerians' to focus more on competence rather than on zoning in the race to find President Muhammadu Burhari’s successor in 2023. He said, In the US , where I returned from, you will be fascinated to Know that there is zoning system.  So, in Nigeria, you can zone all you want but if you are zoning just for zoning sake, you won’t get results. We have travelled the world and people ask what does Boko Haram mean?” he  urge the government to apologies to those who feel aggrieved or treated unfair. The government should humble themselves, tell  the youths that they are sorry, that you have misled them for decades and you would do much better in the future. They will lay down their axes and embrace peace.

 

 

Regulator of the telecoms sector, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed concern over safety fears raised by the aviation industry in the United States (US) over the rollout of the fifth generation (5G) technology in the country. Nigeria is at the threshold of deploying the technology having concluded the bid for the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum that will be used to deploy the technology in the country in December 2021.  The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) say the rollout of the technology in the country should go on as scheduled. They are convinced, based on empirical reports, that there is no interference with aviation navigation systems with 5G technology mobile phone services.

The Zamfara state government has disbursed N40,000 each to 8,593 vulnerable beneficiaries, as announced by AGILE coordinator Sa’adatu Abdu Gusau. The payments were made directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts, allowing for ATM withdrawals. Complaints can be addressed via suggestion boxes, a GRM line, or official correspondence. Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal also inaugurated the distribution of over N1 billion under the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) program to support local businesses, with varying grants for nano, micro, and small businesses. In December 2024, Governor Lawal distributed N5 billion to assist 44,000 vulnerable individuals as part of a COVID-19 recovery initiative.

The Nigerian Court of Appeal (PCA) is handling 1,209 petitions and 813 cases from primaries for the 2023 general election. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem urged politicians to manage their affairs and focus on national economic development. The court has 98 panels and 39,526 appeals pending as of 31st August 2023. She commended Justices and support staff for their performance and urged the Federal Government to improve the welfare and work condition of court officials.

Universities in the UK and U.S. are mostly private owned and fully commercial.

Mohammed Zarma, an ex-DEPUTY Comptroller with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has reclaimed his freedom. He was allegedly kidnapped by armed individuals last Friday in Kwara State. The source said that the kidnappers' initial demand of N10 million was later dropped to N6 million, even though the ransom sum was not made public. But before disclosing any information, he claimed he needed to create contracts.

 

A factional leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State Sen. Magnus Abe has said that struggle in the state party is for justice and fair play , and not about him.

Abe told the crowd that contrary to the impression in some quarters that the crisis in Rivers APC was caused by his ambition to become governor.He said it was a struggle for righteousness  to be enthroned, for justice to shine, and if people do not stand up for what is right, what is wrong will overtake us.

In a bid to achieve Africa’s target of $450 billion income through export, AFEX has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ghana Commodities Exchange (GCX), to boost  cross border commodity trading ecosystem across Nigeria and Ghana.

The MoU signing, took  yesterday place in Abuja.

Speaking at the ceremony the Chief Executive, Ghana Commodities Exchange, Mrs. Tucci Ivowi, said “Since 2017, the GCX has been committed to improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers, and this partnership with AFEX is an extension of our commitment to drive transformative change in the agriculture sector. The Intercontinental Marketing and Communication Consortium (IMCC) has issued an apology to the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) for deploying the "All Eyes on the Judiciary" billboard without an approval certificate. The agency acknowledged breaching Article 24(a) of the Nigeria Advertising Practice Code, which requires all advertising, marketing communications, and related materials to undergo ARCON's vetting process and secure the ASP's approval certificate before public exposure. IMCC stated that the agency sent artwork to ARCON liaison officer Markus Inji Lukman, who provided reassurances that the material would be approved.

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) was sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Fagbemi, a respected jurist, is expected to initiate reforms to reshape the legal system. Former Nigerian Bar Association President Dr Olisa Agbakoba expressed confidence in Fagbemi's abilities and the support of the Bar. NBA President Yakubu Maikyau pledged NBA's support for Fagbemi and urged Maikyau to present the NBA's official position on law reforms and areas of improvement for the Judiciary. Fagbemi is expected to avoid controversial decisions and chart a new path for himself and the justice sector.

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has received a goodwill visit from four of his Southwest colleagues, who discussed security and peace in the geo-political zone. The visit was at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had expressed concern over the reports on Akeredolu's health. Akeredolu's first public appearance since his return from medical leave in Germany on September 7 was attended by the governors, Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo). The governor thanked his colleagues for their solidarity and spoke on the continuous collaboration and sustenance of regional brotherhood among Southwest states. In the last two weeks, protests in Akure have been held by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters, seeking the governor's whereabouts and insinuations that Akeredolu had become incapacitated. The rift between his deputy, Lucky Ayedatiwa, and the House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct deepened in Akeredolu's absence. Ayedatiwa urged the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusola Odusola, to ignore the request of the lawmakers for the setting up of a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against him. A group of lawyers of Ondo State origin, who are against Aiyedatiwa's impeachment, asked Akeredoku to declare his health status and organize a press conference to declare his fitness.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has summoned a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples' party of Nigeria (PPN) in Zamfara State, Adamu Bashir and two others to take their plea on an alleged N299.86 millon fraud charge. The other firm, OBD Petroleum Limited; and its managing director Umeanor Obinna Micheal.Justice Abimbola Awog boro issued the bench warrant on wedneday, sequel to an applicatin by a senior counsel in the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). Mrs Kehinde Bode-Ayeni. Bode -Ayeni alleged that the Defendants had failed to show up for their arraignment filed against them. Justice Awogboro granted the application and adjourned till March 3, for defendants' arraignment. According to the amended charge marked FHC/L/281c/2016, the defendants on about October 2014, obtained loans of N160million and N139.8mllion in two tranches from a bank by false pretence and with intent to defraud. The defendants allegedly pretended that money woulld be used to supply 2.2million litres of AGO to Lastal Energy, Limited.

James Ornguga, said the supplementary training is a booster session designed to equip the new agents with the technical skills required to handle the digital platform and take the registration exercise closer to the grassroots.“Our aim is to make the process inclusive and efficient. With more agents at the ward level, people will be able to register without unnecessary delays,” he said.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost the Kogi central senatorial seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the second loss in Kogi State. The Election Petitions Tribunal in Lokoja nullified the victory of Jibrin Isah of the APC and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct supplementary elections in the district. The tribunal also upheld the election of Senator Sharafadeen Alli of the APC, dismissing the petition filed by PDP candidate Chief Joseph Tegbe. The tribunal also declared Nkeiruka Onyejeocha winner of the February 25 National Assembly election.

The committee’s mandate focuses on resolving lingering disputes, managing emerging threats, and fostering inclusiveness among both longstanding and newly inducted party members. Emphasis was placed on strategic engagement, wide consultation, and proactive conflict resolution mechanisms capable of producing sustainable outcomes. Although no official communiqué was issued after the meeting, subsequent confirmation highlighted the committee’s resolve to prioritise collective party interests over personal ambitions. By advocating unity, inclusion, and forward-looking strategies, the committee seeks to reinforce internal stability within the APC, which is critical for maintaining political dominance and ensuring effective governance in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said there is no truth is the rumour about the possibility of replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 general election.The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, debunked the rumour in a statement yesterday in Abuja.Morka said the rumours and name speculations were purely speculative, untrue, and utterly baseless.The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to growing media frenzy about the possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate to President Bola Tinubu under the platform of our great party ahead of the 2027 general election.The party also urged ministers, senior government and party officials to avoid, wittingly or unwittingly, stoking needless speculations.It advised them “to focus on their primary duty of diligent service to government and our Party, and bolster the success and achievements of President Tinubu, our inimitable and visionary leader”.

The Supreme Court has corrected a clerical error in its October 14, 2021, judgment, recognizing Chief Edozie Njoku as the Nation Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to deal with Chief Victor Oye as the party's chairman, raising doubts about the neutrality of the umpire in the leadership crisis that has plagued the party since 2019. The court confirmed that the appearance of Oye's name in the judgment was an error and that Chief Edozie Njoku was the proper party to the proceedings. Despite appointing Oye as AGPA Chairman, INEC continued to recognize him despite protests from Njoku-led party executives. Justice Madugu rejected Oye's claim to APGA leadership and declared his claim unlawful. INEC failed to abide by the judgment but chose to appeal.

General Officers Commanding (GOCs) and other top Field Commanders have been appointed by the Nigerian Army. Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, explained the development's role in efforts to revitalize the army in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja. Moreover, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahay, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), tasked the newly appointed senior commanders with upholding the trust placed in them and redoubling their dedication to their new positions.

 

The Academic Staff Union of Universties (ASUU) yesterday declared a "comprehensive total and indefinite strike". It cited the alleged failure of the Fedral Government to address its demands. The indefinate strike took effect from 12.00am yesterday. ASUU took the decision at the end of an emergency National Executive meeting at its secretariat in Abuja. 

SENIOR dons have berated the Fedral Government for refusing to pay members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for the duration of the six month strike. ASUU had insisted on payment of salary as condition to return to work. Prof. A.O Adefulu-Ositelu described the government as "wicked and insensitive" to the education and future of youths. she said if the children of top government functionaries atteneded public universities, government would not allow the strike for one week. Adefulu-Ositelu slammed the ill treatment of lecturers, stressing, "our best products are pushed into global servitude because of the uncommitted attitude and decisions. This is stunting our national progress and success". She called on the government to pay salaries of lecturers and meet ASUU`s demands. "it is embarrassing and disheartening that this kind of statement should be allowed, and still drag on.It shows the insensitivity of government. This is uncalled for..."

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to finalize negotiations regarding its demands, expressing concern over the government's indecisiveness and warning of potential severe consequences for the education sector. During a National Executive Council meeting at Taraba State University, ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna stated that the union is dissatisfied with the government's insufficient offers, having suspended a warning strike to allow for further engagement. ASUU has given the government a one-month timeframe for negotiations but has already rejected proposed salary increments as inadequate to address the ongoing brain drain in universities. The union emphasizes the need for urgent attention to salary and conditions of service while criticizing the government for misrepresenting negotiations and failing to honor agreements. ASUU insists that the government has adequate resources and lacks only the political will to meet their demands, which include revising the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding, and settling outstanding salary arrears.

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the presiding pastor of Citadel Global Community Church, has expressed concern about the negative effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on Nigerians' living conditions. Bandits have attack Ukuru village in Bobi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State; killing an unspecified number of people and burning several houses. The gunmen  invaded the community riding on motorcycles with all of them carring AK-47 rifles. They first attack the Ukuru Market where people were buying and selling and their presence and gunshots made the traders and customers flee the market. Niger State Commissioner for information, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris confirmed the attack, saying that the number of people killed in the attack was yet to be specified. He also said several houses and vehicles were burnt by the bandits. He, however, reiterated the government's determination put an end to the activitiies of bandits in the state.

Gunmen on Tuesday morning and night struck in three communities in Nigere and Plateau States, killing 51 residents before fleeing unchallenged. Bodies of 34 persons killed in Niger's Nakuna and Wurukuchi communities were found in bushes and farms. the attacks in Niger and Plateau were cofirmed by Police Commissioner Monday Kuryas and Operation Safe Haven commander Maj. -Gen. I.S.Ali. They did not dispute the figures. The gunmen were said to have captured and killed three tof the hunters in one of the two communtities. They noted thtat in the last few years, a lot was veing done to address tje securityu challenges in the country but pointed out that jmore resources and community mobilization were still needed to flush out terrorists and bandits. The governors were led by Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State.

A group of school children have been abducted by bandits at Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State, just hours after President Muhammadu Buhari arrived for a private visit. The assailants terrorized the community before abducting the students, while those who managed to escape fled into nearby bushes. Parents are now searching for their children's whereabouts. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a significant decrease in confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last three weeks, with the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria decreasing by 52.6% and the number of deaths decreasing by 26.9%. However, hospitalisation increased by 21.5%. The data from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) showed that 13,769,415 of the total eligible persons were reached with the first dose and 5,199,824 with the second dose. The NCDC has also made repeat tests compulsory for returnees to the country during the first and subsequent waves of the pandemic.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to implement additional financial sanctions against the Niger Republic's military junta and their associates. The Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) Monetary policy Committee (MPC) will begin its two day policy meeting on the 24th January  2022, with all indications pointing at the retention of the existing monetary policy stance. The apex bank will assess developments on the economic front and announce its monetary policy. Most analysts were of the view that the CBN's MPC will maintain the status quo again this week given the earlier anticipated decliing inflation.The CBN had maintained the status quo 25 times in the last 28 meetings.

The CBN's liabilities impact sovereign risk assessments, as the net foreign reserves are less than the $33 billion widely publicized figure. The CBN's government borrowing is high at 75% of total loans and advances, and investors must verify ownership of foreign credit securities.

The National Assembly's proposal to make strikes in the health sector illegal has been condemned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Assembly Healthcare Professionals (AHPA), and Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors. President Bola Tinubu's administration faces significant challenges, including a high debt stock of over N77 trillion, a debt to GDP ratio of over 23%, an interest rate of over 20%, and a projected economic growth rate of 2.9% next year. Nigeria spends 96% of its revenue servicing debt, with the debt-to-revenue ratio rising from 83.2 percent in 2021 to 96.3 percent by 2022. The 2023 budget only allocates 30% of total expenditure on critical capital projects, and the non-debt recurrent expenditure (NDRE) is over N8 trillion, which accounts for over 60% of the budget. To make meaningful progress, urgent institutional reforms must be undertaken, which were not done by previous administrations. President Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidies on his inauguration has become a catalyst for resetting the government and resting the economy. However, Nigerians expect topline politicians and government functionaries to lead by example, making sacrifices and bearing the brunt of the challenges. This will engender trust and confidence in Nigerians and earn their support during this critical period of nation building. Staying politically conscious is no longer acceptable, as Nigerians are more politically conscious than ever before. Sustainable progress requires sacrifices from top leaders, including the Executive, Legislature, and State Governments.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved two major electrification projects worth N213.7 billion.The projects, according to the government, are meant to improve energy access in universities, teaching hospitals, and rural communities across the country.The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, broke the news while addressing reporters at the State House in Abuja, after the seventh FEC meeting, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Adelabu said the first project, valued at N145 billion, inclusive of 7.5 per cent VAT, is for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of power systems under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). It will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund and is expected to be delivered within seven to nine months. The approvals granted today demonstrate President Tinubus commitment to transformative investments in power infrastructure that directly impact lives, learning, healthcare, and productivity, Adelabu added.

High Court of the Federal Capital Territory yesterday struck out an application by the State Security Service to secure an order to detain the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele for a further 14 days. The application, marked FCT/ 2023 and heard by Justice Hamza Muazu, was filed on Wednesday by lawyers from the agency and came up before the vacation judge yesterday. Justice Muazu struck it out for being an abuse of the court process and for want in jurisdiction. When the judge questioned counsel to the SSS, Victor Ejelonu, on the court’s jurisdiction given the provisions of Sections 293 and 296 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which vests exclusive rights on the Magistrates’ Court to grant detention orders, the counsel withdrew the prayer.

Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio, has declared a nationwide curfew following an attack by unidentified gunmen on military barracks in Freetown. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the plot to disturb the peace and constitutional order in the country. The curfew was imposed as security forces continue to search for fleeing renegades. ECOWAS called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the illegality and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government and people of Sierra Leone's quest for democracy and good governance. The Federal Government of Nigeria is implementing a strategy to reduce borrowing and increase both foreign and domestic investments, as stated by Minister of Finance Wale Edun during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The government's focus is on enhancing revenue generation and sustainable financing through domestic resource mobilization rather than international borrowing. Key reform efforts include raising tax revenue and implementing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UAE to attract foreign investment. Edun noted the country's economic growth has improved, with plans to further increase the tax-to-GDP ratio to fund social services and infrastructure, aiming for a more self-reliant economic framework.

The assurances came as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated that the unemployment rate reduced from 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 4.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2023.  

Edun said ongoing government initiatives would put an end to hyperinflation and a decade-long decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita. 

He spoke at the retreat fro the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms in Abuja. 

Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, announced that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered assets worth over N500 billion in the past two years of President Bola Tinubu's administration. Shettima emphasized the administration's policy of non-interference in anti-graft agencies' operations, prioritizing public accountability and enhancing institutional accountability. The EFCC has recorded over 7,000 convictions and recovered assets in excess of N500 billion. The proceeds of recovered assets are being channeled into developmental initiatives, including students' loan and consumer credit schemes. Shettima also emphasized the administration's commitment to the rule of law and urged members of the judiciary to discharge their duties with patriotism and integrity. He called for collective commitment among all arms of government to strengthen the fight against graft.

Enugu State Government has set an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target of N870 billion for the year, exceeding last year's total IGR of N406.77 billion. The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS) reported that in 2025, tax revenue contributed N51.5 billion (12.6%), while non-tax revenue accounted for N355.2 billion (87.4%). The IGR increased from N26.8 billion in 2022 to N406.7 billion in 2025, demonstrating a growth of 125% from the 2024 figure of N180.5 billion. Key reforms under Governor Peter Mbah, including technology deployment and the widening of the tax net, have bolstered income without raising tax rates. Mr. Emmanuel Nnamani of ESIRS noted that infrastructure investments are expected to enhance tax revenue, revealing a 72% year-on-year increase in tax revenue from N30 billion in 2024 to N51.5 billion in 2025.

The Federal Government has enhanced welfare reforms for military personnel, allocating N18 billion for group life insurance benefits and establishing a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre. Defense Minister Mohammed Badaru emphasized the "Soldier First" policy aimed at improving morale and living conditions for service members and their families. The new databank will manage veterans' affairs efficiently, while the call center will support retired officers and families of fallen heroes. Additionally, plans include reviewing the Nigerian Legion Act to create a Veterans Federation of Nigeria, expanding welfare packages, and implementing the Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits initiative to engage retired veterans in community rebuilding efforts. Badaru highlighted that supporting military personnel is vital for national stability.

The federal government borrowed N563.4 billion from the domestic capital market at its latest bond auction, increasing its allotment to N563.359 billion. The DMO had offered four tenors of bonds, including the 10-year, 13.9800 per cent February 2028 bond with a previous stop rate of 13.99 per cent, the 15-year, 12.500 per cent April 2032 bond with a previous stop rate of 14.90 per cent, the 20-year, 16.2499 per cent April 2037 bond with a previous stop rate of 15.90 per cent, and the 30-year, 14.8000 per cent April 2049 bond with a previous stop rate of 16 per cent. The average stop yield closed at 15.31 per cent. At the recent auction of Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs), investors had staked N906.21 billion, providing headroom for the government to increase its initial offer by 44.5 per cent. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had offered N224.50 billion across three tenors of 91-day, 182-day and 364-day NTBs, but total subscriptions by investors peaked at N906.21 billion.

The Federal Government has urged the World Bank to back its Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme.The initiative is a grassroots-focused initiative designed to stimulate economic activities across the country and advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of a $1 trillion economy by 2030.Bagudu explained that the programme, recently approved by the National Economic Council and coordinated by his ministry, is a transformative plan aimed at driving bottom-up growth and lifting millions out of poverty.“The objectives, among others, are to promote sustainable and inclusive growth at the ward level, which will contribute to national development,” Bagudu said. “This will support the $1 trillion GDP target by 2030 and help lift all Nigerians out of poverty.“Nigeria’s recent decisions represent a critical moment. Such choices are not easy, but they create opportunities for a new path. The World Bank stands ready to continue supporting Nigeria in maintaining these reforms and increasing their impact,” he said.He described the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme as a promising initiative but stressed the importance of building on proven structures.

The Federal Government in Nigeria plans to spend N400 million on vehicles for former presidents and heads of state if the 2017 estimated spending by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) is approved. The funds for these allowances were not openly budgeted for in the proposal. The SGF, Babachir David Lawal, defended the planned expenditure before the Senate Committee on Federal Character. The committee agreed that the 10% release by the Ministry of Finance for the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation in 2016 was insufficient, which may indicate a problem between the Budget Office and the Ministry of Finance. The committee will investigate the poor release to the OSGF and seek to understand the issue. The request for more funding by the OSGF is considered "justified" by committee chairman, Senator Tijjani Kaura.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to establish over 24 skills and innovation centres across the country through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The Innov8 Hub, a focal point for innovation start-up incubation, technology transfer, knowledge and skills impartation, prototype development and fabrication, is being partnered with by TETFund for practical training and mentorship for Nigerian youths and academics. The aim is to provide equal opportunities to all Nigerian children, regardless of their location. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, praised TETFund and the Innov8 Hub for providing learners and researchers from colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities with the platform to undertake practical impactful research. He promised to bridge the gap between researchers and industries and bring in big entrepreneurs and relevant ministry positions to see the potential of the centres. The government will also train students and give them skills to generate a lot of young Nigerians from internally displaced persons' camps and elsewhere.

The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, led by Taiwo Oyedele, has submitted 20 recommendations to the President of Nigeria regarding various economic aspects. The committee focuses on taxation, job creation, foreign exchange reform, ease of doing business, investment, and relief from the pains of petrol subsidy removal. The committee also proposes the digitisation of the foreign exchange (FX) regime to discourage speculation and hoarding of foreign currency in cash. The committee also calls for the imposition of excise tax on FX transactions to generate revenue. It also suggests forward contracts for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) as a short-term solution while waiting for improvements in key economic indicators. The committee also calls for the suspension of multiple taxes, modification of the Tax ProMax system, Data4Tax, personal income tax, tax breaks for the private sector, payment of taxes in Naira, waiver of penalties and interests, FX reforms, social intervention, mobile phones for cash transfers, civil service reform, policy signaling and collaboration, global employment opportunities, export expansion grants, and tariff review. The committee's recommendations aim to address the contentious issue of multiple taxation, digitalize the FX regime, and encourage collaboration among government agencies and economic management teams. They also aim to remove bottlenecks for export expansion grants and facilitate cross-border trade.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have reached agreements to alleviate petrol subsidy pain, halting their planned strike. The agreement includes providing 55,000 CNG conversion kits for an auto gas conversion programme, pending completion of state-of-the-art stations. The government plans to roll out the program next month with pilots across 10 campuses. If not implemented, the strike issue will be revisited, impacting all Nigerians.

While for amounts over N 1 million, the bank will take property security or bank guarantee. According to BoA the money  farmers are taking from the bank are not grants, it is the capital of the bank that is being used to give to farmers to do their business, if they don’t pay back, the bank capital will be eroded and  the bank will start having challenges in meeting her obligation.

The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has  said it was not joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for any political scheming ahead of the 2027 general election.Addressing reporters yesterday at Gidauniya, Kano, the party’s state chairman, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, announced that the party would not affiliate with any movement or coalition, apart from the umbrella party.“We categorically distance the Kano State chapter from the breakaway members who have formed a coalition under the African Democratic Party.“This effort is crucial for the strengthening of our grassroots support and enhancement of our operational effectiveness,” he added.Kabiya assured PDP’s national executives of absolute loyalty in all matters concerning the conduct of the party businesses.

The security services in Plateau State have been ordered by the governor of the state, Simon Bako Lalong, to go after the attackers who attacked and killed three people in the Rafin Bauna, Bassa Local Government Area on Sunday. The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has discovered 189 fake companies involved in land racketeering in Abuja, Nigeria. The Federal Government should licence meter manufacturers to sell directly to electricity consumers to bridge the huge metering gap, as of September last year, only 4, 772,906 (37.33%) of 12,784,685 customers had been metered. The Federal Government of Nigeria has warned religious leaders against incendiary messages that could cause religious war in the country. The government deemed allegations of Islamization of Nigeria and persecution of Christians as fallacies and emphasized that conflicts between Muslims and Christians are often fueled by political motivation, ethnic differences, extremism, intolerance, and terrorism. The government also dismissed the accusation that the military was arming Fulani herdsmen to kill Christians as ridiculous. Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed stated that the government was concerned about the incendiary messages sent by religious, political, and opinion leaders. He criticized the media for insinuating that the government was either out to Islamize Nigeria or persecute Christians. The government believes that some comments by religious leaders had political connotations and that conflicts between Muslims and Christians are often fuelled by political motivations, ethnic differences, extremism, intolerance, and terrorism.

Stakeholders in the maritime industry have raised concerns over the Ministry of Transportation's financial allocations in the 2022 budget, which were found to be duplicated in the Appropriation Bill. The 2022 budget allocated N15.13 billion for personnel, overhead, and capital projects.

Critical assets and personnel across all federal airports are to get insurance cover following yesterday’s approval of a N1.09 billion package by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo dropped the hint after the FEC meeting at the State House in Abuja. Keyamo told State House reporters that the approval aligns with a directive from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), which mandates Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to insure critical government assets. The minister noted that many airport assets had remained uninsured for a long time, putting them at risk. The approved insurance scheme, he noted, will protect infrastructure and personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The N1,097,137,102.48 insurance contract, which includes 7.5% VAT, will be executed over a year, beginning from the completion of the premium payment by FAAN. The minister reaffirmed that the approval underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving aviation safety, infrastructure security and workers welfare.

The Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to reconsider its decision to ban the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets. The association, along with civil societies, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and workers from various companies, protested at the agency's Lagos office. They argued that the ban would cripple investments and lead to job loss. The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, urging the Federal Government to call the NAFDAC Chief to order in the interest of the nation's economy and the likely consequence of the decision on millions of Nigerians, whose means of livelihoods are connected with the sector. The executive secretary, Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association, a union under TUC, Comrade Solomon Adebosin, said the protest became necessary following the decision of NAFDAC to commence enforcement on the ban. He emphasized that proper regulation through access control and advocacy are globally accepted as a sustainable approach in resolving the imbroglio.

The Nigerian naira has fallen by 6.7% in two days, trading for N710 against the U.S. dollar on Aboki Forex. This record fall comes a year after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) prohibited the sale of foreign currency to bureau de change operators (BDC) due to their unauthorized sales above their authorized market. The suspension of BDC operators' ability to source foreign exchange from the CBN could impact the country's economy by mounting further pressure on the national currency. The apex bank threatened to arrest and prosecute Nigerians using naira to buy dollars last week, but has been criticised for failing to initiate policies to stabilize the country's currency value in the forex market.

 The national Agency for the Prohibition of Traffickig in Persons (NAPTIP) said it rescued 90 victims and reunited 85 others with their families between May and December last year in Akwa Ibom State. The agency's Zonal Commander in Uyo. Mr Ubong Ekwere, disclosed this in chat with reporters in Uyo yesterday while reviewing last year's activities of the agency. Ekwere said during the period under review, the command  recieved and investigated 93 cases and apprehended 103 suspects in the human trafficking, adding that 19 cases were still penging in courts. the commander noted that the new trend of human trafficking was the selling and buying children,where buyers warn parent and guardians to be vigilant and to monitor where their children and wards were at any point in time. The  zonal commander also appeal to state governments to include NAPTIP in their security meetings  to enchance information sharing. Also, the agency and department of State Service  said a Burudian woman and her children in a village in Imo, have been rescued. Adekoye added that the victims were rescue based on a complaint from the United Nations (UN) High Commission for Refugees lodged at NAPTIP Headquaters. He stated that "it was gathered that the victims who have refugee status in Kenya were trafficketed to Lagos by a yet-to-be- identified trafficker in September2021, and thereafter moved to Umunoha Imo State. Adekoye also quoted NAPTP's Commandant in Imo State, "the account of the State. Mr Ernest Ogbu, as sayng "the account of the victims indicated that they might have been  deceived by the traffickers."

The National Assembly yesterday approved President Bola Tinubu's request to appoint 20 Special Advisers. His request were read at plenary by Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase, after Lawan read the letter, Senate Leader Ibrahim Gobir moved a motion for the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President and Commander in Chief for the approval of the Senate to appoint 20 Senate Advisers. The House in line with the provisions of section 151 of the 1999 constitution toed the same line with the senate.

The National Assembly has passed the Investment and Securities Service Bill 2023, which includes provisions for possible jail sentences for those who promote Ponzi schemes in Nigeria. The bill is expected to protect investors, regulate the market, reduce systemic risks, and provide for more stringent punishment for operators of Ponzi schemes. It also prohibits Ponzi/Pyramid schemes, which have led to the loss of billions of naira on victims and affected confidence in the investment climate in Nigeria. The passed bill prohibits Ponzi/pyramid schemes as well as other illegal investment schemes and prescribes a jail term of not less than 10 years for promoters of such schemes. According to Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission, three million Nigerians lost N18bn when the popular Ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mundial Movement, crashed in 2016.

The National Assembly is prosposing a Bill that will empower the Securities and Exchange commission (SEC) to impose stiff punishment on promoters of Ponzi schemes and other unregistered investment schemes. The Bill is expected to empower the SEC with legal backing to effectively regulate the capital market and emphasise the independence of the commission in line with the requirements of the international organisation of securities commissions (IOSCO). The amendment is tittled: "A Bill for an act to repeal the Investments and Securities Act 2007 and Enact the investments and Securities and Exchange Commission as the Apex regulatory Authority for the Nigerian Capital Market as well as regulation of the Market to ensure Capital Formation, the protection of the Market to ensure protection of investors, Maintain Fair, Efficient and Transparent Market and reduction of Systematic Risk, and for Related Matters."

To foster greater cooperation and information exchange among securities regulators, the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) has published a set of best practises for the use of international supervisory colleges in the securities markets. Nigeria sits on the IOSCO board and participates in the organization's Growth and Emerging Markets (GEM) Committee. The report offers a framework for securities regulators looking to establish new international supervisory colleges for financial markets segments where they are not currently used. Doing so could improve coordination between regulatory bodies and help regulators further address the negative effects of market fragmentation. The paper recommended using supervisory colleges to exchange information and crisis management strategies.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has delegated authority for the regulation of animal science practice and all matters pertaining to animal husbandry in Nigeria to the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), which was established by Act No. 26 of 2007 as amended in 2015.
