The Becheve tribe in Cross River State has an odd practice where girls, sometimes as young as four years old, are used as collateral for loans their parents obtain from more illustrious kinsmen. Victims of the practice include Beatrice Okumo, Jennifer Abega, and Beatrice Okumo. Beatrice was given as collateral for a sum they borrowed from her creditor, Papa, who was then 50 years old and much older than her father. Jennifer ran away from slavery when she was 10, but her uncle resisted her attempt to freedom and told her mother to either return her to the creditor or repay his debt.

2019: Is Igbo Presidency Feasible
by Raymond Mordi
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly backed the emergence of an Igbo president in 2019, despite mixed reactions from prominent Igbo politicians. Some argue that the challenges facing Nigeria have gone beyond who becomes president and that the best approach is to restructure the country and allow each region to develop at its own pace. However, some believe that the Igbo cannot be considered serious when they argue that they are marginalized, as they have always been part of the leadership. For instance, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe supported military President Ibrahim Babangida as de facto vice president from 1985 to 1986, and Dr. Alex Ekwueme served as vice president from 1979 to 1983. Additionally, several Igbo sons and daughters have held sensitive positions in government since the return of civil rule in 1999. Some also believe that the Igbo have been deliberately relegated to the background in politics, arguing that their achievements can be attributed to their resourcefulness, industry, and hard work.

2022- Stop violent and corruption terrorism
by Tony Marinho
In order to protect the National Cake, which is being stolen by a select few and leaving millions of people disenchanted with nationalism, Nigeria must agree to the Nigerian Promise to be FLH in 2022. Infrastructure has deteriorated as a result of leadership failing to see that the colonial 4–7 year cycle of maintenance was immensely profitable for contractor/civil servant cartels and civilians alike. Nigeria's ability to create infrastructure and superstructures has been hindered by politics and theft, and financial problems predict social aspects like poverty, unemployment, and happiness indexes linked to security indexes. Nigeria must put an end to terrorism and corruption in 2022 and elect a younger generation of top political figures for the years 2023–2027 if it is to advance.

Despite the rebranding of the Nigeria Prison Service, the system of operation of NCS still remains the same, with overcrowded prison facilities, underfeeding, and large number of inmates awaiting trials. The Ministry of Interior must ensure that correctional facilities and institutions nationwide are well-equipped with security apparatus and put in place programs that will positively alter and correctively reconfigure the attitude of those handling convicts in their custody. Ex-convicts should not be abandoned and condemned to loneliness and death after they leave the correctional centre, as it may damage their mentality, psyche and self-esteem. The government and other concerned authorities must provide an enabling environment for ex-convicts to live well and responsibly.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to implement additional financial sanctions against the Niger Republic's military junta and their associates. The CBN is implementing these sanctions under the authority of the ECOWAS bloc. Nigeria has already cut off electricity transmission to its northern neighbors to pressurize the military to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The President's spokesman maintains that the ultimatum given to the military Junta in the Niger Republic is not a Nigerian mandate and that the ECOWAS response to the military coup in Niger has been and will remain devoid of ethnic and religious sentiments and considerations. The Niger coup leaders vowed to resist external pressure to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum after ECOWAS imposed sanctions and Western allies suspended aid. The junta informed ECOWAS that it cannot host a delegation from the West African regional bloc. The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun directed Assistants Inspector General (AIGs) of Police and Commissioners of Police to be alert to avert internal security crisis following the Niger coup saga. Financial experts warn that the Central Bank of Nigeria's large foreign-currency liabilities to external creditors may worsen foreign exchange volatility and naira depreciation. The country's risk profile may discourage foreign investments, as the CBN's dollar-denominated borrowings undermine foreign reserves and worsen the national debt position. Nigeria's total public debt rose to N49.95 trillion in the first quarter, and the CBN borrowed $7.5 billion from JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs to stabilize the economy. The CBN's liabilities impact sovereign risk assessments, as the net foreign reserves are less than the $33 billion widely publicized figure. The CBN's government borrowing is high at 75% of total loans and advances, and investors must verify ownership of foreign credit securities.

by Bala Yusuf
President Bola Tinubu's administration faces significant challenges, including a high debt stock of over N77 trillion, a debt to GDP ratio of over 23%, an interest rate of over 20%, and a projected economic growth rate of 2.9% next year. Nigeria spends 96% of its revenue servicing debt, with the debt-to-revenue ratio rising from 83.2 percent in 2021 to 96.3 percent by 2022. The 2023 budget only allocates 30% of total expenditure on critical capital projects, and the non-debt recurrent expenditure (NDRE) is over N8 trillion, which accounts for over 60% of the budget. To make meaningful progress, urgent institutional reforms must be undertaken, which were not done by previous administrations. President Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidies on his inauguration has become a catalyst for resetting the government and resting the economy. However, Nigerians expect topline politicians and government functionaries to lead by example, making sacrifices and bearing the brunt of the challenges. This will engender trust and confidence in Nigerians and earn their support during this critical period of nation building. Staying politically conscious is no longer acceptable, as Nigerians are more politically conscious than ever before. Sustainable progress requires sacrifices from top leaders, including the Executive, Legislature, and State Governments.

The Chief Magistrate said he is strongly convinced that the claimant's attorney has adducted cogent, convicing and sufficient evidence to hold that the property in its aforesaid deplorable state is indeed in dire need of outright substandtial, compelable repairs and I believed it is justifiable to so declare in the prevailing circumstance. In furtherance therefore I am convinced that this is one of such rare crucial circumstance where this court can firmly stand proactively and justifiably invoke the provisions of Section 45(1) (a) of the 1999 constitution in the overwhelming interest of public safety.

High Court of the Federal Capital Territory yesterday struck out an application by the State Security Service to secure an order to detain the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele for a further 14 days. The application, marked FCT/ 2023 and heard by Justice Hamza Muazu, was filed on Wednesday by lawyers from the agency and came up before the vacation judge yesterday. Justice Muazu struck it out for being an abuse of the court process and for want in jurisdiction. When the judge questioned counsel to the SSS, Victor Ejelonu, on the court’s jurisdiction given the provisions of Sections 293 and 296 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which vests exclusive rights on the Magistrates’ Court to grant detention orders, the counsel withdrew the prayer.Â
Emefiele was on Tuesday granted bail for N20 million with one surety in like sum by the Federal High Court in Lagos State where he is facing two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Democracy: How Media has fared Since 1999
by Raymond Mordi
Nigerian media has played a crucial role in promoting democracy since 1999, advocating for good governance, human rights, and democratic values. The media's advocacy role is even mentioned in the titles of Nigerian newspapers like Vanguard, Guardian, Punch, and Tribune. The role has been recognized in Section 22 of the constitution. The media's opposition to military dictatorship in the 1990s was another heroic moment. The advocacy role led to the resignation of Hon. Salisu Buhari as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1999 over allegations of age falsification, the easing out of office of Ms Stella Oduah in 2014 for corruption-related charges, and the current ordeal of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, David Babachir Lawal, over allegations of grass-cutting contract scandal. However, the advocacy and reform-oriented role of the media came at a significant cost to practitioners and their organizations. Journalists continue to suffer intimidation from state officials, including arrests, prosecutions, and persecution of critical journalists. Additionally, Nigerian journalists work under poor working conditions, with low salaries and irregular working conditions.

Recent fiscal and monetary changes have rekindled hope for a brighter economic climate in Nigeria, with foreign portfolio investors retaining more funds in the market. Total foreign transactions rose by 70.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2023, driven by a 197.5 per cent increase in inflows. The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX) reported that the positive market performance came "amid the bounce of a new administration and raft of changes in government policies." Retail domestic transactions increased by 40.70 per cent from N88.50 billion in May to N124.52 billion in June 2023, showing that more individual Nigerians were optimistic about the economy despite the immediate challenges that greeted major policy changes. The institutional composition of the domestic market increased by 19.9% from N197.26 billion in May 2023 to N236.49 billion in June 2023. Market analysts unanimously agreed that the stock market performance has been in response to President Bola Tinubu's policy direction, with a consensus that the direction would significantly uplift the economy and drive foreign and domestic investments in Nigerian assets. The total foreign transactions in the first four months of 2023 stood at N62.18 billion, owing to soaring inflation, prolonged foreign exchange scarcity, and uncertainties building up to the 2023 elections. The Nigerian stock market launched into a major rally on the first trading day after Tinubu's inaugural address, with net capital gains totaling N1.51 trillion, its highest gain in a day in two and a half years.

They voted for the convention to hold on February 26, and sent emissaries to President Muhammadu Buhari on the need for the convention to hold as decided. President Buhari supported the governors' push for a democratic structure in the party instead of the continuation of an ad hoc leadership, and directed the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) to keep to its earlier proposal to hold the convention in February. Some governors said the alleged challenges listed by the Caretaker Committee were not enough to shift the national convention. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar brought back restructuring in the country's political lexicon last year, stating that the structure is heavily defective and does not provide an enabling environment for growth among the 36 component states of the federation. Since then, the clamour for restructuring has continued, with former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. The Southwest region has always been at the forefront of the agitation for restructuring, with speakers at the book launch supporting Akinrinade's call for restructuring. Some speakers, such as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, governors of Osun and Ondo states, and Ray Ekpu, have also backed Akinrinade's call, stating that restructuring will bring about the real change the country needs.

Nigeria is facing a leadership crisis in 2023, and that leadership is the sole determinant of its success or failure. Politicians are mindful of the fact that Nigerians have learnt from their past and have a renewed energy and aspiration to make the same mistake come 2023. Leadership expert and teacher, John C. Maxwell, has a simple yet profound maxim that everything rises and falls on leadership, and Nigeria is a country blessed with rare and rich mineral resources. The upcoming election will determine the trajectory of our nation in the following years, and the issue of federalism, for example, through legislative restructuring of the constitution is a good reference point. Nigerians deserve more than colourful rhetorics and sloganeering, and must ask tough questions on restructuring.

He spent the following ten years conducting research and disseminating knowledge in the ivory tower in order to enlighten and advance society. He was one of the very few people from the northern region of Nigeria at the time to be given the opportunity because he was skilled enough at what he did to get a scholarship from the European Union. The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called for better management of the country's inflation, foreign exchange (FX) and debt portfolio indexes. The LCCI President, Dr Michael Olawale-Cole, projected headline inflation to remain elevated due to food supply shocks, FX policies and illiquidity, higher energy costs, and heightened insecurity. He also anticipated Nigeria's debt stock and debt-servicing to revenue ratio to remain elevated. He reiterated LCCI's position on the need for monetary authorities to liberalize the FX market by unifying the multiple FX rates and ensuring they were market-driven. The National Library of Nigeria's involvement in children's book contests raises issues that need to be addressed. The National Library's partnership with Alphabetic, who is referred to as "a seasoned organiser of World Book Day," is puzzling in certain ways. Anybody older than 16 may enter the competitions. All entries must be unpublished and original, and they cannot be covered by a publisher's contract. Additionally prohibited are abusive, slanderous, or racist materials, as well as "materials deemed explicit, gratuitously violent, or referencing self-harm." The National Library needs to make clear how it fits into this situation. Such a significant national institution is unworthy of it.

The government also dismissed the accusation that the military was arming Fulani herdsmen to kill Christians as ridiculous. Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed stated that the government was concerned about the incendiary messages sent by religious, political, and opinion leaders. Many airline owners are adjusting their applications for Air Transport Licenses or Air Operators' Certificates with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The rising exchange rate and the NCAA's minimum aircraft requirement for start-up carriers are also causing concern. Nigeria sits on the IOSCO board and participates in the organization's Growth and Emerging Markets (GEM) Committee. The report offers a framework for securities regulators looking to establish new international supervisory colleges for financial markets segments where they are not currently used. Doing so could improve coordination between regulatory bodies and help regulators further address the negative effects of market fragmentation. Nigeria’s reserve is $3.7b, not $33.8b, says JP Morgan
by Collins Nweze
JP Morgan estimates Nigeria's net foreign reserve to be around $3.7 billion, significantly below the $33.8 billion reported on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) website. This figure is much lower than the $14 billion net figure at the end of 2021. The lower-than-reported forex reserve is due to larger currency swaps and borrowings against the forex reserve. The bank added $5 billion in International Monetary Fund Special Drawing Rights to external reserves, resulting in total gross forex reserves of $37.8 billion. The bank believes the CBN can withstand the pressure due to profit from swap arrangements between the CBN and commercial banks, allowing rates to continue to rise.

NLC cautions against electricity tariffs hike
by Frank Ikpefan
Organised Labour has warned the Nigerian government against a planned 40% increase in electricity tariffs by July 1, claiming it will increase the burden on Nigerians. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has removed the petrol subsidy and unified Naira exchange rates, causing financial pressure on many Nigerians. The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is currently reviewing the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) and will implement the review from July 1. The major determinants of the review are inflation rate, Naira/Dollar exchange rate, and gas price. NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the plan as insensitive and callous, citing the over 100% increase in pump prices of premium motor spirit and a shift in exchange rate. The NLC believes the issue of capacity to pay and quality of service delivery is superior to market rationalization. The NLC advises market fundamentalists to check their conscience and consider the potential consequences of the proposed tariff hike for collective safety.

by Ojibor Ojiabor
A row in the Senate ensued after Ondo South senator Yele Omogunwa defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement of Omogunwa's defection led to a walkout when Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki overruled the demand to declare Omogunwa's seat vacant. This may have strained the relationship between majority APC senators and their minority counterparts in PDP. Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio raised a point of order, citing the 1999 Constitution, and argued that there was no leadership crisis in PDP following a Supreme Court judgment. However, Saraki ruled Akpabio out of order, which angered PDP senators. Senator Dino Melaye justified Omogunwa's defection, citing Section 68 (g,h) of the 1999 Constitution. Senator Peter Nwaboshi argued that Melaye's intervention was a breach of procedure. The situation escalated into a row, with PDP senators demonstrating their disapproval of the situation.

Nigeria is set to curb imports in the face of declining revenue from oil, but its agriculture sector is facing hard times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and soaring inflation. The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) proposed that African countries allocate 10% of their budgets to boost agricultural productivity, but Nigeria has failed to implement the policy. Its budgetary allocation to agriculture rose from 1.70% in 2017 to two% in 2018. Nigeria's low budgetary allocation to agriculture is one of the reasons the sector has not recorded huge progress when measured against the African Union's African Agricultural Transformation Scorecard (AATS). The AATS tracks progress in commitments made by AU Heads of State and Government through CAADP and the Malabo Declaration to increase prosperity and improved livelihoods for transforming agriculture. Concerned stakeholders and experts in the sector have called for an increase in funding allocated to the sector, but also improvements in the effectiveness of agricultural spending.

Solomon Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has accused soldiers operating checkpoints around the Ikeja axis of Lagos State of robbing and killing his aide, Mr. Adeniyi Sanni, on August 5. Adeola claimed that Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, on his way to his home at Isheri. He was asked to provide the documents of his car, which he did through a WhatsApp message. However, when the wife called him later, the soldiers were still checking the vehicle's particulars. Adeola believes that his aide was killed by a syndicate of soldiers operating under Brigadier General Nsikan John Edet, under the newly deployed Commander of 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigeria Army. He has urged Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, to direct the fishing out of the killers of his aide for further investigation, prosecution, and justice for the deceased. Adeola said such a pattern of killings and armed robbery had been established against soldiers mounting late-night checkpoints around Ikeja, with similar unreported incidents in recent times around Ikeja. He added that the Army could not be seen to condone or harbor rogue elements robbing and killing innocent Nigerians "within its fold."

And lool- maybe it won't, maybe everything will only get worse till it all blows out, On a personal level, though, people have a propensity to rely on the delusion of time in order to make choices and take action. We have to have faith that things change and that achievements are even meaningful.According to AITAi, making a resolution without first understanding why we engage in the behaviour we wish to change would only lead to chaos. "I think there are two main reasons why resolutions fail: Either there isn't a strong desire for change, or we fail to implement it.

The five justices unanimously ruled in favor of the President, dismissing petitions by Atiku Abubakar/PDP, Peter Obi/LP, and Princess ChiChi Ojei/APM. The court also found the nomination of Vice President Kashim Shettima as running mate as untenable. The ruling sparked jubilation in New Delhi, where the President and his team celebrated the victory. The Nigerian Supreme Court has ruled that a presidential candidate must score one-fourth of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before being deemed duly elected. The court criticized the petitioners' interpretation of Section 134(2)(d) of the constitution, stating that the word "and" between the expression "he has not less than 1/4 of the votes cast at the election in at least 2/3 of the states of the federation and the FCT was completely falacious, if not outrightly ridiculous." The court also ruled that the petitioners failed to discharge the burden of proof placed on them by the law.

Two foreigners held for forex manipulation
by Alao Abiodun
Two Binance executives, an American and a British-Pakistani, have been detained in Nigeria on the orders of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu over alleged involvement in foreign exchange manipulations. The Federal Government obtained a court warrant to detain the men for 12 days, pending further investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The arrested executives were taken into custody at a guest house operated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The Federal Government plans to ban cryptocurrency trading owing to alleged sharp practices on their websites. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, claimed that billions of dollars had passed through the channel from unidentified sources in the last year alone. The NSA has asked Binance to provide data on its operations in Nigeria over the past seven years. The arrested executives declined a request to delete all Nigerian information from their platform, insisting that they would not do so until they were taken to their countries' embassies. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified the reasons for the clampdown on Binance and other cryptocurrency trading websites, declaring that failure to stop Binance will lead to the destruction of the economy.

Umahi promises durable roads across Nigeria
by Moses Emorinken,
Works Minister David Umahi yesterday decried the short lifespan of roads across the country.
He said the average lifespan of roads in Nigeria is between five and seven years. Â
The minister said this may be attributed to a number of reasons, including lack of competence among contractors, the climate, and the quality of materials used in constructing the roads.
Umahi bared his mind after touring some roads, including those under construction in the last 20, 12 and three years.Â
The minister said the sad development was unacceptable to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said the government would explore the use of technology, including concrete, in constructing its roads across the country, instead of using asphalt.Â
According to him, this will expand the lifespan of roads for up to 50 years.
Umahi urged state governors to prioritise the repair and construction of all roads, regardless of whether they are state or federal-owned.

Uunderstanding the dimensions of bullying in Schools
by Mattthew Alugbin
Depending on who is investigating the concept and the incident that led to the examination of the concept, bullying has different meanings to different people. A secondary school student might not be able to provide a general definition of bullying if asked. Bullying can take many different forms, with some students defining it as name-calling, verbal abuse, and social exclusion while others characterize it as removing another person's pen or books. Sadly, in certain situations, the PTSA executive are even mere appendages of the school administration because they receive waivers for their children's tuition. They find it challenging to express viewpoints that serve the interests of all the parents because of this. Bullying is not a structure-specific behavior. Bullies are present throughout the educational system.

Who will fix our broken country
by Imrana Yakubu Galaje
The recent trend in Nigeria is that most Nigerians want to run away, and the most preferred country of destination is Canada. Leaders are not comfortable keeping their kids in the country they are leading, and life is becoming unbearable. Academics are seen as the torchbearers of every nation and should be able to lead us out of challenging situations, but there are several research centres headed by academics but no research output. This raises the question of who really are we and what will we do if we get to the National Assembly or the presidency. Nigeria is facing serious economic and technological challenges and no functional research in its institutes. Prof. Ibrahim Bello Kano's recent statement suggests that the university atmosphere is now heavy with officialdom, office-seeking, and clique groups, threatening to take over academic and research endeavors. The union of academics is not different, as members must belong to a clique to be part of the excos or to make the union's list for elective positions. Those at the middle and lower levels are not interested in the system and are looking for an opportunity to cheat it. The university is not the problem, but the people in the universities fighting for selfish interests.

by collins Nweze
The World Bank has named soaring interest rates, rising inflation, and the effects of COVID-19 economic shutdowns as factors in the decline of privately owned firms. Nigeria and other developing economies were highlighted by the bank as being particularly hard hit by the difficult economic conditions. The multinational agency claims that the private sector is contracting under significant pressure. Government expenditure and monetary policy, according to the head of the World Bank, are in unknown territory as macroeconomic imbalances continue to rise to previously unheard-of proportions. He continued by saying that the central bank's balance sheet had absorbed previously unheard-of quantities of bank reserves financed by long-term assets. He pointed out that major central banks are taking out sizable bank reserve loans to keep their bond and mortgage portfolios in tact.

Zamfara: Burying Patriotism in the Courtyard of bitter politics .
by Musa Muhammad
The main cause of the lingering crisis in Zamfara is largely dirty and petty politics by so-called political stalwarts who understand only their selfish interests. This is despite the fact that banditry predates the coming to power of Governor Bello Matawalle, and many of the elders and political bigwigs of the state were caught on record claiming to be looking for lasting solutions. General Gusau is a national figure who should be benefiting from his experience as a decorated military general, but has allowed his military instinct and razor-shap patriotism to be deadened by petty politics of bitterness and deceit. Former governor Attahiru Bafarawa has appointed himself as lords over the travails of the people of Zamfara, yet they have refused to stick with their troubles. They should steer clear of acts that distract Governor Matawalle from rescuing the state from total collapse.
