A seven-man delegation of the Confederation of African Football(CAF), on Tuesday, visited the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium to inspect facilities ahead of the 36th Africa Nations’ Cup, Nigeria is bidding to co-host with its neighbouring Benin Republic in 2027. 

The CAF inspection team was led on a facility tour of the 15,000-capacity stadium by Mrs. Sabina Chikere, the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Sports Commission.

IN a move to forestall the impreachment of ondo state deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, National chairman of the All progressive congress, Abdullahi Umar  Ganduje, has set up a nine man trouble-shooting team to resolve the misunderstanding between Aiyedatiwa and his principal, Rotimi Akerdolu. Former Nigerian Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, has filed a motion to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC)'s powers to prosecute him for alleged $6 billion in contract fraud. The EFCC alleged that Agunloye illegally awarded a contract for the construction of a 3,960 MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station without any budgetary provision, approval, or cash backing. Agunloye was also alleged to have corruptly received a kickback of N3.6 million from the company he awarded the contract to. The defendant, who also served as a Minister of State for Defence, pleaded not guilty to the seven-count charge against him. At the resumed proceedings, the 76-year-old defendant queried the EFCC's powers to try him over the alleged offenses, arguing that the agency was bereft of both the investigative and prosecutorial powers under Sections 6, 7, and 46 of the EFCC Act, 2004 to initiate the case against him.

Following the expiration of the seven-day deadline issued by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Niger junta to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, the West African has issued more economic sanctions on Niger.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered fresh sanctions through the Central Bank of Nigeria on entities, and individuals related to and involved with the military junta in Niger Republic.

The Diphtheria outbreak continues to pose a huge threat to Nigerian communities, affecting children in 27 states and with no fewer than 137 deaths and 1,534 confirmed cases recorded between May 2022 and 2023.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) Diphtheria Situation Report, on Tuesday, indicated that worst hits states in Nigeria were Kano and Yobe State, with Kano (1,055), Yobe (232), Kaduna (85), Katsina (58), Bauchi (47) and the Federal Capital Territory (18) accounting for 99.3 per cent of all suspected cases.

The latest report said a total of 1,506 suspected cases were reported from 11 states across 59 Local Government Areas, with 39 deaths recorded among all confirmed cases and a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 6.7 per cent. Cumulatively for May 2022 to July 2023, it said, “A total of 4,160 suspected cases have been reported from 27 states across 139 LGAs in the country. Kano (3,233), Yobe (477), Katsina (132), Kaduna (101), Bauchi (54), FCT (41) & Lagos (30) account for 97.8% of suspected cases.

Farmers under the auspices of Wheat Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria said they have identified 77,000 hectares of farmland for dry season wheat cultivation.

The President of the Association Wing Comdr Shuaibu Hamza (Rtd) stated this recently during a meeting of Commodity Association Presidents in Abuja.

He said that already, there are over 20,000 farmers who are on standby for government to support in terms of inputs, finance, and security to begin cultivation this coming dry season. Hamza said Nigerian wheat production suffered serious setback when farmers were convinced to abandon the country’s local varieties of wheat when the colonialist arrived. He, however, said that current efforts by designated research institutes have developed four different varieties of wheat which have been tried in many locations and the results were satisfactory.

The Federal Government in Nigeria is set to resume direct cash transfers to 15 million Nigerians to address poverty. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Wale Edun confirmed President Bola Tinubu's approval for this move. The government plans to increase the benefiting households from three million to 12 million. Edun emphasized the importance of using technology to make simple payments between registered and direct beneficiaries, reducing poverty. He also highlighted the President's commitment to ensuring cost is borne by the most people, particularly the poorest. Despite high food prices, the President has intervened by opening grain stores and releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of grains. Ibadan Recreation Club tops at the maiden edition of the Oyo Premier Club Games Festival held on Thursday at the Club premises in Oyo town, Oyo state.

While Oyo Premier Club 1960 won a game out of the four games played during the competition, Ibadan Recreation Club won three games played during the competition.

The games played include lawn tennis, table tennis, darts and ayo olopon, while the Oyo premier club won the ayo olopon game, the Ibadan Recreation club won the lawn tennis, table tennis, and dart games during the festival.

Participating clubs at the Games Festival include Oyo Premier Club, Ibadan Recreation Club, Abeokuta Sports Club, Ilesha Sports Club and Oyo Recreation Club.

Speaking shortly after the end of the competition, the President, Oyo Premier Club, Barrister Jide Olanipekun explained that the competition is mainly organised to stimulate the interest of its members in sporting activities.

Adding that the festival is in line with the objective of the founding fathers of the club which according to him is to always engage in Recreational activities to put the body and souls together.

He said “This is the maiden edition of the games Festival and it’s very significant in the way of interacting with other neighboring clubs in Ibadan, Ijesha, Abeokuta, Oyo and all over the World, although all the clubs are affiliated to us, while we put this together is to continue the interactions with other clubs outside Oyo, as well as stimulating the Interest of their members more in sporting activities, so that the objective of the founding fathers will be realized.

In the bid to avoid another national disaster, the Federal Government has issued a formal notice to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to take necessary measures to safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians against imminent flood, as Cameroon authorities set to open the Lagdo Dam floodgate.

The notice was contained in a letter with Reference No: CC.16/3/11 dated 23rd August 2023, issued by the Federal Ministry of Forever Affairs (East and Central African Division) and addressed to the NEMA Director General, Mr. Habib Mustapha Ahmed. 

The letter signed by the Director of African Affairs, Ambassador Umar Z. Salisu on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, read: “I have the honor to inform you that the Ministry is in receipt of a Note Verbale from the High Commission of the Republic of Cameroon informing that Cameroonian Officials have resolved to open the flood gates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in days ahead due to the heavy rainfall around the Dam catchment area in Northern Cameroon. “According to the Note, it is pertinent to note that when the release of water becomes necessary, the authorities of the Lagdo Dem will be releasing only a modulated variable small amount of water at a time in order to mitigate’ and avoid damages that the released water may cause along the River Benue basin in both Cameroon and in Nigeria.

Several Airstrikes conducted by the Air component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) have successfully destroyed three illegal refining sites in Rivers State and three militant/pirates camps in Cross River State, respectively.

This was contained in a statement made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja on Sunday by the NAF  Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.

The NAF Spokesperson stated that the airstrikes were executed in continuation of efforts aimed at containing the activities of terrorists, militants, and other criminal elements bent on destabilizing the nation and making life unbearable for peace-loving Nigerians. 

He explained that the air component of OPDS on 27 August carried out air interdiction missions on some illegal refining sites located at Cawthorne Channels, Bille, and Gogokori in the Degema local Government area of Rivers State.

He said the airstrikes were undertaken after the sites were observed to consist of illegal refining sites.

He said that at Gogokori, a Cotonou boat observed to be loaded with illegally refined products and heading into open waters was also engaged and destroyed.  The Director added that similar strikes were conducted at Idama in the Akuku‐toru local government area and Omoma in the Degema local government area of Rivers State following intelligence of refining activities at the two locations.

The Nigeria labour congress (NLC) on Thursday asked the Federal Government to shelve its plan to increased electrictity tariff by 40 percent.

Single and third-phase prepaid meters will now cost N81,975 and N143,836 respectively as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved price increases for Meter Asset Providers (MAPs).This implies that the single-phase meter which initially went for N58,661 is now up by 40 percent while the third-phase formerly N109,684 increased by 31.1 per cent.he approved meter prices are exclusive of Value Added Tax it stated.Also, the Commission said the approved review is inclusive of the revised Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) sealing cost of N843/unit for Single-phase and N1,100/ unit for three-phase.It said the development is pursuant to the provisions of section 8(1)(c) of the MAPs Regulations which provides that the costs of single-phase and three-phase meters for MAPs, inclusive of all other associated costs of installation and warranties shall be at the regulated rates approved by the Commission.

THE Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has distributed certified rice seeds to smallholder farmers in the southwest region. The distribution exercise, which was held in Ibadan, Oyo State, recently, had clusters of smallholder rice farmers from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States as beneficiaries. In his address, the Director of Agriculture, Mr Abdullah Abubakar, represented by Mr Dauda Ayeleke of the Rice Value Chain unit, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the input to increase rice productivity in order to enhance their livelihoods. Abubakar noted that Nigeria, being the highest rice-producing country in Africa, must sustain its production level and increase to achieve desired self-sufficiency target in food production.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has approved N130,000,000.00 as zonal intervention for each polytechnic in its 2023 intervention line, geared towards reinvigorating skills acquisition in polytechnics across the country. This is to consolidate the efforts of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in increasing the capacities of polytechnics to deliver on their mandate. The intervention focuses on projects with academic relevance, addressing deficiencies in core areas of acquisition of essential instructional materials and equipment for teaching and learning. Since the inception of the Zonal Intervention in 2016, the Fund has allocated a total sum of N52,046,079,584.7 as zonal Intervention to enlisted polytechnics. President Bola Tinubu met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Mele Kyari. Kyari said the federal government is owing the company the sum of N2.8 trillion that it had already paid on petrol subsidy, making it impossible for the company to have funds to channel into its core businesses. The NNPCL boss assured that government will initiate measures to cushion the effects of the removal of subsidy. The federation is waiting for NNPC to settle up to N2.8 trillion of its cashflow from the subsidy regime, which could be a huge challenge for the company. Foreign Airlines trapped funds across the globe have skyrocketed to $2.27billion in April 2023 from the initial $1.55billion in April 2022. Nigeria topped the most indebted five countries with $812.2 million, followed by Bangladesh with $214 million debts, Algeria with $196.3 million, Pakistan with $188.2 million and Lebanon with $141.2 million. The IATA DG declared that airlines cannot continue to offer services in markets where they are unable to repatriate the revenues arising from their commercial activities in those markets.
