Allege $6bn Mambilla power fraud; ex -minister.
by Saliu Gbadamosi
Former Nigerian Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, has filed a motion to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC)'s powers to prosecute him for alleged $6 billion in contract fraud. The EFCC alleged that Agunloye illegally awarded a contract for the construction of a 3,960 MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station without any budgetary provision, approval, or cash backing. Agunloye was also alleged to have corruptly received a kickback of N3.6 million from the company he awarded the contract to. The defendant, who also served as a Minister of State for Defence, pleaded not guilty to the seven-count charge against him. At the resumed proceedings, the 76-year-old defendant queried the EFCC's powers to try him over the alleged offenses, arguing that the agency was bereft of both the investigative and prosecutorial powers under Sections 6, 7, and 46 of the EFCC Act, 2004 to initiate the case against him.

Farmers prepare 77,000 hectares of land for dry season wheat production
by Collins Nnabuife
Farmers under the auspices of Wheat Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria said they have identified 77,000 hectares of farmland for dry season wheat cultivation.
The President of the Association Wing Comdr Shuaibu Hamza (Rtd) stated this recently during a meeting of Commodity Association Presidents in Abuja.
He said that already, there are over 20,000 farmers who are on standby for government to support in terms of inputs, finance, and security to begin cultivation this coming dry season. Hamza said Nigerian wheat production suffered serious setback when farmers were convinced to abandon the country’s local varieties of wheat when the colonialist arrived. He, however, said that current efforts by designated research institutes have developed four different varieties of wheat which have been tried in many locations and the results were satisfactory.

NAF Airstrikes hit illegal refineries, militants’ camps in Cross Rivers —Spokesperson
by Jacob Segun Olatunji
Several Airstrikes conducted by the Air component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) have successfully destroyed three illegal refining sites in Rivers State and three militant/pirates camps in Cross River State, respectively.
This was contained in a statement made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja on Sunday by the NAFÂ Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.
The NAF Spokesperson stated that the airstrikes were executed in continuation of efforts aimed at containing the activities of terrorists, militants, and other criminal elements bent on destabilizing the nation and making life unbearable for peace-loving Nigerians.Â
He explained that the air component of OPDS on 27 August carried out air interdiction missions on some illegal refining sites located at Cawthorne Channels, Bille, and Gogokori in the Degema local Government area of Rivers State.
He said the airstrikes were undertaken after the sites were observed to consist of illegal refining sites.
He said that at Gogokori, a Cotonou boat observed to be loaded with illegally refined products and heading into open waters was also engaged and destroyed.  The Director added that similar strikes were conducted at Idama in the Akukuâ€toru local government area and Omoma in the Degema local government area of Rivers State following intelligence of refining activities at the two locations.

Nigerians bemoan infrastructural decay at Lagos airport
by Shola Adekola
Nigerians particularly those in the diaspora who formed the major bulk of air travellers coming from different parts of the world through the Murtala Muhamed International airport, Lagos have continued to express disappointment at the infrastructural decay adorning the number one gateway airport in the country. On a daily basis, as international flights arrive the airport, it has become a recurrent decimal to see many passengers having landed safely at the airport use all manner of unprintable words to express how disgusting they are with the dilapidated infrastructures scattered all over the airport. For travellers flying into the Lagos airport from places like Europe, America or Middle East, the first horror awaiting them is the stench that oozes out of the old and unkempt toilets therein which do not befit the status of any international airport even at smaller airports in neighbouring countries. Apart from the stress you will be made to pass through in the hands of the immigration officials who may keep you standing on the queue for the same hours it takes you to fly for example from places like London to Lagos to have your passport stamped, more troubles await you in the hands of the other different uniform personnel whose major aim is to exploit you.Â

NLC kicks against electricity tariff hike
by Christian Appolos
The Nigeria labour congress (NLC) on Thursday asked the Federal Government to shelve its plan to increased electrictity tariff by 40 percent.Â
NLC, in a statedmetn signed by its president, Comradee Joe Ajaero, said the plan to increase electricity tariff tby 40 percent by July 1 is bothe insentsitive and callous and reflects an organised indifference to the well- being of consumers, especially the poor ones.
The issue of capacity to pay and quality of service delivery are not onlu germane but superior to andy rationalisation by market logic.
The rate ata which theya ate going is highly combative and combustible.
In light of this, our advice is that that this proposed tariff hike should be shelved for our collective safety.

The Senate's decision follows a statement by Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who suggested Nigeria could no longer sustain electricity subsidies, indicating a potential move to raise tariffs. The Senate Committee on Power is investigating the N2 trillion subsidy requirement, outstanding debts to power generating companies (GenCos), and gas companies. The Senate also urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to use the N10.5 billion penalty imposed on Discos and find lasting solutions to Nigeria's electricity billing system. Some senators, like Abba Moro and Aminu Tambuwal, emphasized the need to focus on improving electricity generation and distribution before considering tariff hikes.

President Bola Tinubu met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Mele Kyari. Kyari said the federal government is owing the company the sum of N2.8 trillion that it had already paid on petrol subsidy, making it impossible for the company to have funds to channel into its core businesses. The NNPCL boss assured that government will initiate measures to cushion the effects of the removal of subsidy. The federation is waiting for NNPC to settle up to N2.8 trillion of its cashflow from the subsidy regime, which could be a huge challenge for the company. This is due to the country not having the money to pay for the subsidy and NNPC not being able to pay their bill.

We are authentic stakeholders in Ekiti PDP-Fayose group.
by yomi Ayeleso
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, loyal to former Governor Ayodele Fayose, has declared that they are the real stakeholders and members of the party in the state. This comes after recent gatherings and moves by some leaders and members called for the repositioning and takeover of the running of Ekiti PDP. They alleged that the activities of Fayose, especially his relationship with the APC-led government of Biodun Oyebanji, are constituting a threat to the progress of the PDP in the state. One of the staunch followers of Fayose, Omolade Bolarinwa, dismissed the calls and moves by some people within the party against the former governor and noted that Fayose has done more for the PDP to win elections. Bolarinwa queried: “Who are the stakeholders? We (Fayose group) are the authentic stakeholders as far as PDP is concerned in Ekiti State. Can those former party chairman and the rest of the people you mentioned, can they claim to be more relevant than a two-term governor? “These people are hungry set, I see them as a group of unserious elements looking for relevance and what to eat. Don’t mind them, they can’t fly to anywhere. We are authentic PDP stakeholders.
