'KDSG budgets N4bn for poverty alleviation'

Malam Muhammed Sani Abdullahi, the commissioner of the Planning and Budget Commission, revealed that the Social Register in Kaduna state has more than two million persons from both urban and rural areas. In a keynote lecture titled "The Role of Students in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the commissioner made this claim during a summit hosted by the Kaduna State Students Union (KADSU) at Kaduna State University. Furthermore, he revealed that the 2022 budget for the Kaduna State Government had more than N4 billion set aside for pro-poor interventions. He also said that the current "youth generation is the largest the World has ever known; young people are changing the landscape with high demand for skilled opportunities.

The Kaduna State Scholarship and Loan Board will have a new source of income thanks to the establishment of the Education Trust Fund by the Malam Nasir El-Rufai administration. The Executive Secretary of the Board, Malam Hassan Rilwan, revealed this and stated that although the enabling law is still being developed, the "Act will soon be ready." The Trust Fund would allow people, organisations, and even Non-Governmental Organisations to donate to the fund, he continued, adding that the law will explicitly state how it will be handled. He was speaking about the activities the Board has planned for this year. Additionally, the Board was established by the Malam Nasir El-Rufai administration to offer scholarships to three students.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), 1.74 million children in Nigeria's North East are underweight. Acute malnutrition analysis among children in six local government areas, including Machina, Yusufari, Nguru, Bade, Bursari, and Geidam, all located on the northern edge of Yobe State, reached a critical level according to the Integrated Food Phase Classification (IPC). In Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, the analysis found that "high levels of acute malnutrition are prevalent in many areas between September and December 2021, with over 60% of areass analysed being in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification IPC AMN Phase 3 (serious) of 4 (Critical)."Through August 2022, it is anticipated that almost 1.74 million children under the age of five will have acute malnutrition.This includes more than a million children who are moderately malnourished and about 614,000 kids who are extremely malnourished. Additionally, it's probable that over 151,000 women who are pregnant or nursing will be severely undernourished.

Twenty-eight people have been killed in separate attacks on communities in Kaduna and Niger States by bandits. While 16 were killed and 40 houses razed by the attackers in Southern Kaduna, 12 persons were killed by bandits in Niger State, who struck in Shiroro local government area.The troops of the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces who responded to the distress calls from the area also fell into an ambush as they mobilised to the scene of the attack. Those killed were Elizabeth Ayuba, Veronica Auta, Bege Daniel, Kephas Waje, Promise Jacob, Damaris Istifanus, Hauwa Joshua, Dogara Gambo, Lidia Ishaya, Michael Achi and Gabriel Michael. The co-convener, concerned Shiroro Youths of the Niger State, Sani Abubakar Yusuf Kokki said, "rampaging hydra headed, venomous, murderous and heartless terrorists well-armed with assorted sophiscated and dangerous weapons stormed Galadima Kogo, Shiroro local government area, Niger State in broad daylight and unleased mayhem on their victims at sight including unsuspecting unarmed members of the community". Meanwhile the commissioner for local government and internal security Emmanuel Umar has confirmed eight people dead.

There are currently 8,181,086 million unmetered electricity users who use the distribution firms' estimated billing systems. This represents 64% of the nation's energy users, according to data from the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Metering Status report as of November 2021. Just 4,666,998 of the 12,848,084 registered power consumers as of November 2021 had meters installed, according to the report. This is equivalent to 36%. Ibadan Disco, which has the most registered electricity users (2,076 million), also has the most unmetered customers (1.29 million, or 62%) according to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) metering status of the DisCos as of November 2021.

Abubakar Audu University Produces 60 First Class Graduates

Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyinga (PAUU) has produced 60 first class graduates in various disciplines. A total of 20,634 graduates and 1,600 from the school of postgraduates studies were awarded certificates at a combined convocation of the institution held at the main campus, Ayingba, on Saturday. The vice chancellor of the University, Proffessor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche explained that the institution had not been able to hold the convocation ceremonies since 2015, stressing that the convocation which could have been held in 2020 was cacelled due to the advent of Covid-19 in the country. Proffessor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche , who is the first female vice chancellor of the university, said the citadel of learning graduated a total of 20,634 students from 2014/2015- 2019/2020 academics sessions. According to her, out of 20,634 graduates, a total of 60 made first class, while no fewer than 80 made ordinary pass. She said in adition the University also graduated now fewer for 1600 from the school of Post Graduate Studies with 87 phD degrees, 556 masters degrees, 97 postgraduates diplomas and 138 diploma certificates.

Following the relative peace being achieved in Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni yesterday lifted the 10 years ban on the use of motorcycles in Yobe North and South of the state. Governor Buni lifted the suspension and restored the use of motorcycles in 10 local government areas. The local government areas are Gashua, Jakuso, Machina, Yusufari, Nguru, Karasuwa, Potiskum, Fune, Nangere and Fika. Buni commended the residents for their resilience and patience during the 10 years of suspension of motorcycles in the state, which came into effect at the height of the Boko Haram Insurgency. He said his administration was satisfied with the current security situation in the state, adding that security forces were still flushing out and arresting remnants of Boko Haram members and their collaborators. According to the governor, the lifting of the ban is meant to ease the hardship of citizens, facilitate easy transportation and cost-effective movement as well as enhance farming activities in the state. Â

The law against open gracing signed by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State has begun to yield results, some stakeholders have said. Although cattle were seeing gracing openly in some obscure locations across the State, the incidence of clashes between farmers and herders that used to characterise their relationship had become less. Community leaders, a farmer and a fulani praised the State government for putting the anti-open gracing law in place, saying that since it was signed into law, there had been no conflict between herders and farmers and it would be difficult to obey the law prohibiting open gracing because ranching is very expensive and impracticable considering the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Four girls kidnapped by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have been freed. The suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists released four girls from the 22 women and two men they abducted in three communities of Chibok local government area of Borno State. ISWAP terrorists had attacked Pemi on January 21, 2022, Kautikari on January 14 after the previous one on Korohuma in December 30,2021, where 22 women and two men were abducted, while four persons were killed as several houses were set ablaze. The four freed girls were among those abducted on Friday, 14th January, 2022. Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum was in Chibok town following the recent attacks on the three communities. He met families of the 22 women and two men abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP during the attack. After meeting the families, the governor interfaced with heads of security agencies and discussed gaps and ways to enhance security in the communities.

A group, Northern Youth Forum (NYF) based in the Southern part of Nigeria has called on the 19 Northern States' governors to secure the release of their people held in correctional centres in the South. In addition, its chairman, Dr Ibrahim Ya'u Galadanci, alleged that northerners were being subjected to inhuman treatment in the centres and some parts of the Southern region. He asked the governors and all other stakeholders in the north to wade into the matter and rescue such detainees who are sufferings from deliberate humiliation. Galadanci made the demand at a press conference the Northern Youth Forum (NYF) organized at the Conference Hall of Aminci Radio in Kano, yesterday. He said the northerners formed more than 75 percent of the total inmates in Lagos and others southern states correctional centres and these are people that were either arrested based on tribal or ethno-religious sentiments while going about their lawful businesses. Galadanci said the Northern Youth Forum under his watch had so far sought for and secured the release of 501 inmates especially those Found to be free of any criminal charge. however, Galadanci said Nigerians the northerners by law have the right to traverse across Nigeria and do their legitimate businesses anywhere they chose to do so without any hinderance. He alleged that the northerners are hindered from exercising this right in the south.

The three suspects are Mohhammmed Hussaini,32 Adamu Bella, 18 and Mohammed Umar, 18 and were arrested at Tsamiya junction, Madanya road, Mubi, Mubi North LGA, Adamawa state on Friday, January 28 with the exhibits concealed in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said when interviewed they claimed the drugs were being taken to Bagira ton along Nigeria-Cameroon border to be deliverd to some Cameroonians for onward delivery to Maroa in Cameroon. This came on the hels of a similar operation at Alaba Rago area of Lagos where operatives of the state command of Agency intercepted 1,200 parcels of imported loud, a strong variant of cannabis suspected to have been smugggled into the state from a neighbouring country with a total weight of 1,229 kilogams.

In order to raise more money, the government imposed an additional N10 excise duty tax on a litre of soft drinks this year. The government will generate about N141.250 billion yearly from the introduction of the N10 sugar tax on soft drinks and dairy goods alone. Nigerian soft drink industry revenue in 2021 was N9.992 trillion, or $24,048,550,877. By 2026, volume in the soft drinks industry is anticipated to reach 14,713.5 million liters. The soft drinks market is anticipated to have volume growth of 0.5% in 2022. The total amount of soft drinks consumed in Nigeria this year will then be 73,567,500 million liters. The 2021 Finance Act includes a provision that would increase taxes on non-alcoholic and carbonated beverages. According to Nigeria's Labour Union, this proposal will cause further hardship for the populace and result in job losses.Â

According to Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), poverty. The lack of social inclusion, the distance to educational institutions, the low quality of the education provided, and gender inequities all operate against women in leadership positions in Africa. The Minister made this statement at the Africa Women's Leadership Organization's 2022 Open Year Ball in Abuja, shortly after being named the organization's life patron. "Having more women in leadership positions has a significant impact on the bottom line," she asserted. Compared to men, women enter positions of leadership far less frequently.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is under intense pressure to jettison micro-zoning of the national chairman position and allow all aspirants vie for the party's top seat ahead of the february 26 national convention. With less than 27 days to the national convention, the party leadership is yet to officially announce the zone arrangement of office along geo-political regions. Instead, the Mai Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress (APC) had on several occasions spurned reports that it has zoned the offices, and all aspirants in the contest are from North at the moment, some of the zoning projections which have been refuted by the party however favours the North Central as the region to produce the national chairman. Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC) youths, under eagis of Progressives Youths have begun intense lobbying to ensure adequate representation of young people in the new leadership of the party ahead of the forthcoming national convention. Participants were drafted from the six South Western states and Kwara. This agenda is driven by the All Progressives Congress National Youth Lobby Committee under the leadership of Ismaeel Ahmed.

Nigerians have continued to voice their perspectives on the topic after feeling dissatisfied with the director of public prosecution's decision in the case of the late Sylvester Oromoni. After two autopsies conducted by a consultant pathologist at the central hospital in Warri, Clement Vhriterhire, revealed that Sylvester died of "acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication in the background of blunt force trauma," legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Adetutru Oshinusi, cleared the suspects recently. After hearing from the parties, the presiding magistrate, Mikail Kadir, commanded the police to immediately make copies of any statements obtained during the investigation available to interested parties. He also instructed solicitors to submit the necessary requests for certified true copies of any pertinent documents in the court's possession.n.

Coalition of Arewa Civil Society Organisation (CASCO), a pro-northern organisation, has encouraged the Nigerian Police Force to identify unidentified gunmen in the Southeast so that safeguards can be taken. In a joint statement, its convener Dr. Haruna Jagindi and general secretary Ambassador Danjuma Shettima specifically demanded that the case of Uche Nwosu's kidnapping be made public as well as the identity of those responsible for the murder of Hon. Ahmed Gulak. "Those who authorised the operation be identified, whether within the police hierarchy or among distinguished policemen," they commanded. The situation in Imo State was further exacerbated by the Gestapo-style invasion of an Anglican church during a service in an acclaimed bid to arrest Chief Uche Nwosu, former governorship aspirant in the state.

Truckers under the auspices of the Council for Maritime Truck Unions and Association have reported extortions by hooligans along Lagos port access roads. Despite several calls and messages to the relevant government authority, the alleged illegality has continued in broad daylight without any check. The group has sent petitions and official letters to the government, but to no avail. The COMTUA has called on relevant authorities to address the criminal extortion and activities of the touts (sic) against its members, noting that no group has a monopoly on violence and aggression. It has been injured and killed by these criminals without any intervention from the authorities, and the maritime transport industry has been negatively affected by this extortion.

He added that the troops had then mobilized to Marke and Ruheya in response.When the advancing forces were spotted, the outlaws made an attempt to flee. However, in Kwanan Bataro, the military blocked their escape path and engaged them in a gunfight, which resulted in the neutralization of five of the terrorists. After clearing the area, the troops went back to their base. Security troops were maintaining monitoring and patrols in the region, according to Aruwan. The governor, Nasir el-Rufai, was stated to have expressed satisfaction with the operational feedback and praised the military for their prompt and astute handling of the intel they received, according to the statement.

The Presidency has given further clarification on the bad weather which forced the cancellation of the visit to Zamfara State by President Muhammadu Buhari in spite of the planned visit. Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement sais as briefly explained by the president in a special broadcast to the people of the state, the sudden deterioration of the weather was the "sole and only reason for the cancellation of the visit. He said, "A kilometre of visibility is usually a standard landing minimum requirement but in case of Gusau on the day in question, this minimum requirement of 1,000 meter was down, fluctuating between 300-400 meters. Clearly, this was unsafe in the absence of precise instrument approaches that provide guidance for the pilots. The flights into Gusau were, in view of this, cancalled. The statement on the issue by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attacking the president for not making it to Gusau without this being planned ahead of the journey is shameful and disgraceful for a party that held the presidency of the country in rhe past. What is their own record.

The Network of Yobe Civil Society Organisations (NYSCO) and a group of International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) on Social Protection Policy (ACE, COOPL, MERCY CORP, DRC, and SCI) paid Governor Mai Mala Buni a visit to discuss the implementation of social protection policy in Yobe State. The governor was represented by his deputy and the chairman of the social protection policy council, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana. "It is indeed important to recognise your efforts in implementing the national policy, which is a combination of policies and programmes designed for individuals," the governor said.
