Cybersecurity levy: Why implementation can’t take off

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is expected to direct banks to suspend the implementation of the Cybersecurity Levy, which is set to begin on Monday. The CBN circular to banks on the levy has sparked outcry, with a source in the Presidency stating that the President would not allow anything that would further stress citizens. Another source confirmed that the implementation of the Act was an Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) affair, with the CBN playing the middle role. Banks are expected to receive an order to ignore the implementation directive this week. The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, said the Act, which originated from 2015, belongs to the category of old laws being worked on.
