NMA proposes PPP to reverse Nigeria’s annual $2bn on medical tourism

Nigeria's medical association, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), and other partners have mapped out strategies to reverse the 2 billion USD annual capital flight of Nigerians to countries like India, the UK, and the USA for medical care. The NMA president, Prof. Bala Audu, highlighted that Nigeria is the leading exporter of health professionals globally, contributing to the global market for medical tourism, which is expected to reach $180 billion by 2030. To address this issue, the NMA president urged the government to review remuneration of health workers, implement workplace security, and provide necessary equipment and tools. The state has a hospital bed deficit of about 66,288 beds, and the NMA president emphasized the importance of reversing medical tourism in Nigeria. Partnerships with private equity and institutions could also help address the problem.
