| MAN seeks immediate reversal of ban on sachet, pet bottle spirit drinks The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed concern over the recent ban on spirit drinks in sachets and PET bottles less than 200ml. The manufacturers, including the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), argue that the packaging of alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles is not responsible for the reported increase in alcohol use among the underage. They also argue that the ban will lead to bootlegging, influx and proliferation of fake and adulterated products, damage local manufacturing, and negatively affect the economy and social wellbeing. DIBAN participated in the preparation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, CPC (now FCCPC), and Association of Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE) and themselves. The plan aims to identify factors affecting irresponsible consumption of alcoholic beverages, implement strategies guided by best global practices and national priorities, strengthen regulatory activities, and monitor and evaluate efforts.
