2023 polls: Tribunals’ dismissal of 712 petitions, withdrawal of 179 validate our conduct — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has affirmed the conduct of the 2023 general elections, despite ongoing litigations at the election tribunals. Out of 1,196 petitions filed after the polls, 712 were dismissed and 179 withdrawn, indicating that in 891 cases (74.4%), the tribunals found no merit in the petitions and affirmed the results of the elections. National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of the INEC, Mr. Sam Olumekun, stated that INEC should not be blamed for pre-election cases arising from the conduct of primary elections by political parties. He argued that petitions are not against the conduct of the election itself, but rather the eligibility of candidates or their nomination by political parties.
