Kano gov meets Tinubu amid defection talks

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Monday met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid growing political speculation over his planned defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The meeting, Yusuf’s first with the President since Tinubu’s return from Abu Dhabi, lasted about three hours, though the governor declined to address journalists afterward. Sources indicate that discussions centered on Yusuf’s proposed defection, which has been delayed due to unresolved negotiations. Reports suggest the governor is seeking firm guarantees from the APC, including an automatic ticket for the 2027 governorship election, influence over federal appointments from Kano State, and ministerial nomination rights. These demands have reportedly generated resistance within the APC, placing Yusuf at odds with key party figures. The political move has also strained relations with his mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who has condemned the planned defection as a betrayal.
