Fed Govt Bans Collection of Taxes, Levies on Highways

The Federal Government has officially prohibited the use of roadblocks for the collection of taxes and levies nationwide as part of a broader tax reform initiative. This reform includes the introduction of a new Presumptive Tax Framework, which aims to incorporate millions of small and informal businesses into the formal economy. During the signing event at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Olusegun Adesokan, announced that this system is designed to simplify tax obligations for micro-enterprises, such as traders and artisans, by replacing physical roadblocks with a straightforward, rules-based system. The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, emphasized that the framework will utilize business categories and turnover levels for assessments, minimizing the need for complex accounting and providing clarity for authorities. This initiative represents a commitment by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to enhance the national tax base while supporting small businesses to enable government investment in infrastructure, security, and social programs.
