First Lady Reaffirms Commitment to Ending FGM in Nigeria

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has reaffirmed her strong commitment to ending Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria, describing it as a human rights violation with no medical benefit. Speaking in Abuja during the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, she emphasized the need for sustained efforts, collaboration, and advocacy, particularly in rural communities where the harmful practice remains deeply rooted. With Nigeria having the highest number of Female Genital Mutilation cases globally, with over 20 million affected and 14 million more at risk by 2030, Mrs. Tinubu called for stronger partnerships, survivor empowerment, and youth and women leadership in the fight. She stressed the importance of involving traditional and religious leaders to change mindsets and reaffirmed the administration's dedication to eradicating Female Genital Mutilation. Highlighting this year’s theme, “Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation,” she urged all stakeholders to unite their voices and take collective action to protect the rights and dignity of girls and women across the country.
