On the 9th of October 2025, The ISSN International Centre organised a conference to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Standard and Serial Number (ISSN), held at the Francois Mitterrand site of the BNF (Bibliothèque nationale de France, with the theme: “Towards an International Dialogue on the Identification and Preservation of Cultural and Scholarly Publications: ISSN celebrates it’s 50th anniversary”.On the 9th of October 2025, The ISSN International Centre organised a conference to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Standard and Serial Number (ISSN), held at the Francois Mitterrand site of the BNF (Bibliothèque nationale de France, with the theme: “Towards an International Dialogue on the Identification and Preservation of Cultural and Scholarly Publications: ISSN celebrates it’s 50th anniversary”.
The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi in an address commended the Director of the Centre for the milestone achieved and for standing strong inspite of the wave of technology and dynamics of the serials publishing trajectory, stating that the International Centre has been consistent since establishment in 1975. She used the forum to inform the international community what the National Library of Nigeria stands for as a national Centre, milestones achieved, how it strategizes to ensure that the booms from scholarly publications in the nation addresses the need of the stakeholders.
Prof. Anunobi who was also privileged to present a paper at the technical session of the conference discussed the “Booming Scholarly Publications in Nigeria: How the National Library and State Libraries Cope with the Phenomenon”. She provided valuable insights into the scholarly publishing landscape and potential strategies for growth and development, ensuring that publications serves the need of the intended stakeholders.
Meanwhile. the Speakers at the event emphasised the importance of the ISSN identifier for disseminating and preserving serial publications, the value of multilateral cultural cooperation and the challenges posed by the rapid growth in the number of publications, including misinformation and fake science.
The National Librarian was accompanied by Mrs Phyllis Jekhine, an Assistant Director and Head, ISSN in the Department of International Standard and Programmes, National Library of Nigeria.
