Freedom of Information

Background, Significant and Impact of FOI Bill

The Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill is a significant piece of legislation that supports accountability, openness, and good governance. The FOI Bill seeks to promote a more open and democratic society in Nigeria by giving citizens the right to access information held by public entities. The National Library aims to make public records and information more freely available.

Background: The Nigerian FOI Bill was first proposed in 1999 and went through multiple amendments and discussions until President Goodluck Jonathan finally signed it into law on May 28, 2011. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), as the law is officially known, is a tool for ensuring that the general public has access to information that is held by the government.

Significance and Impact: The FOI Act significantly affected Nigeria's democratic and government procedures. By enabling citizens to hold government officials and agencies accountable for their activities, it has helped promote openness and accountability in public institutions. The Act has given media, civil society organizations, and individuals the power to look into and reveal fraud, waste, and bad administration.

Additionally, the FOI Act has promoted public participation in decision-making and interaction. Citizens can make educated decisions and take an active role in issues affecting their life by having access to information. Additionally, this greater transparency has decreased potential for corruption and strengthened public confidence in governmental institutions.
