The Provost of the Centre for Advanced Library and Information Science, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi has urged fresh students of the College to discard any archaic and erroneous notion that librarianship is merely about - arranging books on shelves – and brace up to be trained to bridge the gap between information resources and users.
Speing at the fourth Matriculation Ceremony held at the Monotechnic Premises located at No. 12 Achi Street Independence Layout Enugu, Prof. Anunobi who doubles as the Provost emphasized that the students will be exposed to the old, the new and the expected, thereby turning them into excellent information managers rather than just custodians of information. According to her, "As 21st century information professionals, you are the architects of information curators in digital content and custodians of human knowledge in both physical and electronic forms". She encouraged the freshmen to prioritize their studies, embrace technology and shun social vices. These key elements according to the Provost, are the bedrocks upon which their academic success lies. CALIM prides itself on producing graduates who are not only skilled but also of high moral standing. The new students also took the matriculation oath, marking their official induction into the college, also pledging their allegiance to the Provost and the college authority.
In a keynote address titled: Save Yourself: Embrace Reading Culture, a Senior Lecturer and Head, Department of Library and Information Science, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Dr. Okuchi Okeke spoke extensively on the need to imbibe a personal reading culture, stressing that reading culture is not a hubby, but it's a lifeline. "When one reads, s/he begins to travel without leaving his seat", simply because reading widens the horizon. Dr. Okeke further stated that a person who rarely reads struggles with coursework.
The keynote Speaker identified some of the barriers hindering reading culture, including social media and digital intrusion, stress, ambiguity, language barrier, inadequate fund, stating however, that these challenges could be surmounted through the application of team work, regular visit to the library, borrowing library resources and others. She encouraged students to always stay focussed and determined.
