The National Library of Nigeria in collaboration with Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Library (ZODML) recently unveiled Green Library specially dedicated to children and young adults. The Library situated at the Lagos branch of the National Library opens daily Monday to Friday 8am-5pm, and Saturdays close at early hours.
In a welcome address, the Head of Branch, Mrs Obianuju Onuorah stated that the idea was to catch the children young, making to be aware of their environment. She emphasized that it will make the children stay close to nature by using eco-friendly ambiance in the library such as tree trunks for chairs and tables and also green flowers and plants.Â
Mrs Onuorah informed that a section of the library will be used for home work for older children in both junior and senior secondary schools and another section where they can play games.
She commended the co-founder of ZODML, Mrs Ifeoma Esiri for coming on board with the initiative, aimed at introducing children to climate change both within and outside their environment. She hoped that the establishment of the Green Library will not only make way for eco-friendly environment but will also motivate the children to imbibe a reading habit.Â
Speaking at the event, the co-founder of ZODML, Mrs Ifeoma Esiri, said that the idea was to create a Green Library where one can focus on the environment and grow the children from there. It is expected that the children will have a better understanding and knowledge of the environment and how to manage it. She stated that ZODML is a non-profit organization and seeks support from the general public, publishers and authors to donate books to ZODML. She was hopeful that this gesture will be replicated in all the National Library branches across the federation.
