The National Librarian, Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi in a bid to promote, media and information Literacy among young professionals, flagged off a one-day workshop for young professionals in the industry. The one-day workshop which was organized in conjunction with MILAP, was held on the 18th of July 2024 at the headquarters of the National Library of Nigeria.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, under the theme, Data Literacy: Understanding and Interpreting Data in the Media Space, Prof. Anunobi said that Data Literacy is imperative, given the global need to collate, improve, process, review, share, or retrieve data. According to her, data literacy leverages information, digital and statistical computation, and ethical literacy, she therefore charged participants to be on top of the game on data management, by maximizing the benefits of this training. She encouraged everyone present not to be lazy or docile but to follow the trend by paying attention and learning from the training.
Speaking earlier in her opening remarks, Miss Victoria Toluwanimi, the founder of MILAP said that one of the targets of MILAP is that by 2030, to reduce the spread of fake news among professionals, by organizing seminars, symposiums, and workshops. In achieving this goal, they set up a project tagged "Train the trainers" which focuses on training a select group of professionals who will in turn train and influence their communities positively. According to her, the workshop marks the beginning of the project which is projected to have a lifespan of 3 years. She encouraged everyone to embrace the opportunity to expand their horizons, challenge their assumptions, and empower themselves with the transformative power of data literacy.
Dr. Ahmed Abdulganiyi, the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Abuja who was the keynote Speaker said in his address that professionals must become data literate, equipped with the skills to understand and interpret the data that surrounds them. He also said that critical thinking is essential, it is our responsibility to discern the true story the data is telling. He was represented by Mrs. Folashade Adepoju.
Also speaking at the workshop, Mr. Gladden Uka Ogbale, a Data Analyst who was the first Speaker of the training explained the meaning of data literacy and said the three characteristics of data literacy are curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, according to him these are what are needed to be a data literate and he enjoined everyone to pay attention and learn.
